I’d rather not give myself nightmares man haha! I take your point though, seen there are a lot of trucks hitting bridges in BC.
is it a lack of signage on approach to the bridges or just what I’m assuming to be stupid drivers?
Any UK truckers here that moved to Canada?

Agree with the sentiment, you are better off regretting what you have done than regretting not doing it. We gave up good jobs, sold everything we owned, if you burn the boat on the beach of an island you have to make it work or die. our two children were under 6 years old when we came, we had $10,000 and had to borrow the deposit for our first house. now we own 37 houses, our retirement, i drove truck my wife did cleaning, you can do itAnother Canadian driver and fedupvandriver Thank this.

Glad it’s went so well for you mate. If I’m granted the chance by way of an IEC I’m going to go for it. Thanks for the kind words.Another Canadian driver and Neilwhayes Thank this. -
Lots just don't have any patience. You could have your cruise set at 5 or 6 over the limit and they'll be on your bumper. Then they'll pull out to pass in the dumbest places (blind corner, crest of a hill, travelling loaded uphill etc).Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

well for what it’s worth I’m the kind to do the speed limit after being stung three years ago so if I’m lucky enough to be out there I won’t be one of the aforementioned idiots lol.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

"Big gamble of your life savings" is a worrying thing to me. I don't mean to be negative but it's a bad idea to do that.
I know you're staking your work permit on the iec, but if you take your test in UK you'll have a real qualification that you can use whenever you need it over there, and you will have a lot more credibility to an employer here if you can actually do the job. Your route may work, but to me it seems like reinventing the wheel.
I get why you think your positive attitude and your preparedness to move to another country and take their test will speak volumes in your favor. But everyone who comes out of a school anywhere is raring to go and be thinking very much the same as you.
Have you ever been to Canada? It's very different from one side to the other and while you may like one part you may hate another. My daughter lived just outside Calgary and I couldn't live there for a pension, but they enjoyed it. Newfoundland is like nowhere else I've been in the world, loved the place but even the locals dream about leaving.
Really, don't risk your savings on a chance. Everyone here giving you their opinion came over as a driver in the first place, I'm sure if you had your class 1 and an iec the risk would disappear.Another Canadian driver and jcatel Thank this. -
Holy crap they both look young. That must be the early 80’s ???Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
not negative at all I appreciate your input.
I get what you’re saying, when I said my life savings I may have been a touch dramatic. The money it would cost to do my MELTS could be earned again in a year and a bit. I don’t own a home over here and don’t have any kids so it’s a lot easier for me to go than it would be for some people.
getting my class 1 here and getting a few years experience is plan b. Only reason I’m going for the iec is that I’m right at the deadline of being too old, I also lose 5 points a year for express entry.
it’s a 2 year free pass to go wherever and do whatever I like work wise. I’d likely take a month or two of travelling first to decide where I’d like, because as you say not all areas would suit any particular person.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -

Canada is over dude, there is no point coming here, you won't survive, esp in trucking. If you need proof, just go hangout at the Airport, and talk to all the Irish drivers who are going back home. Like I said in other posts, go to Youtube and search "Why i'm leaving Canada" watch the top 5 video's, and hopefully you will understand why myself and others are saying this. We don't want anyone else, to be fed into the meat grinder that is trucking in Canada.
If you have to get out of Ireland, and want to do trucking, then go to the US (Florida, Texas, N/S Carolina) and make a go of it.
Best of luck.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 27, 2025
