Oh man, child support. That had to be tough. I guess I've been lucky on that front.
OK, I've been out of the truck biz my whole life.I'm aiming to do this for the first time, and I'm kinda old (59). So I'd be doing the CDL course for the first time. I'm not in the US now, so I could come back to almost any place to get set up. I have friends and family scattered all over. So Chicago and that area was just one place I was researching to see how the scene is there.
Chicagoland.....?

Ahhhh ok!!! You're just starting out! By the way, 59 is not old to be starting by a long shot. 59 is far from old these days. I came across a guy in PA that was 70 and in his first year. So yeah, man there's really good companies out there that you can get started with, and they aren't in Chicago. Whenever you get back to the states, just mention on here where you settled at and you can get pointed in the right direction of good reputable companies to start with.

Yeah I will. So far, Texas is looking like the best place, based on the advice I'm getting, and also what I see people say about the different carriers and locations. But I still need to get accepted somewhere, so it's not totally up to me.
ThanksBumper and bryan21384 Thank this. -
Ill get crucified for this but....when I lived in Texas I worked for Heartland Express on their Texas Only Fleet. The terminal is in the Dallas area, but I lived near San Antonio in Kerrville. I dropped my trailer at the Sams Club DC in New Braunfels on Friday and bobtailed to Kerrville and was off every weekend. It is a Sams Club/Walmart account. For the most part you do a drop and hook at a Sams Club or Walmart DC. Since your pulling a Walmart trailer you can park at any Walmart or Sams Club overnight without getting hassled. This was awhile ago but I would look into it if I was you. If your wanting OTR then no, I would not go there. But home every weekend Regional, yes. Ill go put my Nomex suit on and let the flaming begin.......Lonesome, bryan21384 and billermo Thank this.

Ah, well, I don't really have a home now. That's a whole other story. My family will be overseas until I send for them, which will take awhile. OTR is actually my preferred for now.Bumper Thanks this.

Based upon this information, you don't have to worry about where a carrier is from, as your lack of experience only lends you to the mega carriers. All are good and bad in their own ways, you have to figure out which one works for you the best. I would stick with the Midwest for freight, and probably reefer, as its still moving right along. Perhaps Swift Refrigerated or Knight could take you on?billermo Thanks this.

I know I have Swift on my list of phone numbers to call. Let me see if Knight is there too. Aha, no. Let me add them. Thanks mucho. I'll research them and see what the deal is there.

Maybe @Chinatown will have some ideas too.
-
Yeah I'm sure I'll talk to him eventually. Right now I have more than enough ideas. I need to get to work following up on those before I add more to the pile.

ThanksBumper Thanks this.
