I’m also new and looking- I’ve had the most luck with the following
Any jobs that say experience preferred, but not required.
Any jobs that are something like “driver trainee”
Finally, ( and generally your last resort imo ) nearly any one of the big Mega carriers ( Western, Swift, Schneider, etc ) will take you the day you get your CDL
I primarily use Indeed for my job search and there’s always a slew of job postings just for commercial drivers.
I don’t know if it’s helped, but because I already committed to getting my CDL and graduated and got it, I’ve had some decent luck getting interviews.
Those “trainee” jobs will be saving time and money because they won’t have to put me through their whole training program since I already hold a CDL and my endorsements.
I took advantage of state grants through unemployment to pay for my CDL school since I’ve been out of work a while now. Was ready to pay for it myself when someone gave me that advice.
When I was in school, I was trying to get a job lined up and I will say that nobody took me seriously until I held a CDL. I applied and made calls etc, the overall response was always “call us back when you hold your CDL” - so unless you know someone or have an employer that wants you to learn, you’re on your own.Last edited: Jul 11, 2023
