Ok guys, I need help.
I was issued a 23 Volvo VNL860. It has the normal mirror mounted antennas. I'm pretty sure the driver side one is the only CB antenna, however. That being said, my SWR's hover between 3 and 4 most of the time. (using my President's SWR calibration tool). Horrible. But if I stick my hand into the little storage compartment and grab the coax, the SWR jumps around. If it's around 4 at the time, it might go down to 3. Whatever it is, when I grab the coax itself the SWR drops. I can wiggle the wire and get a very slight additional change from me just grabbing it.
But here is the REAL kicker. If it's raining, the SWR shows as 1.0. Now I know that the radio isn't that accurate, but that's telling me that when it's raining, whatever needs to happen is happening and the SWR drops through the floor. But if its a bright hot sunny day, I've seen it as high as 5. I just don't know what to do. I've messed with the antenna a bit, but the SWR doesn't even seem to change when I REMOVE the antenna from the mount. Or at least when I remove ONE antenna. I think the other is for the AM/FM radio.
I'm really lost. ANY ideas will help. I'm not looking to talk 50 miles with 500 watts, just get the SWR down where it won't pop my finals.

The first thing is you need to use an external SWR meter, the internal SWR meters in the radio generally are very unreliable. The second thing is to run a good quality coax to a single antenna. The coax in the trucks are usually a cheap coax that the factory uses. The third problem with the SWR readings changing on you is because of a lack of an RF ground. There's a lot of info on this site about RF bonding. Basically it's adding flat cables to the trucks body to help with the lacking RF ground that these new trucks need, in order for the antenna to perform properly.drivingmissdaisy Thanks this.

Lack of an RF ground? That is interesting because the Volvos have a grounding strap from the mirror mount to the door specifically for this. Volvos are all metal, no fiberglass or plastic on them.
Like I'd said I know the one on the radios aren't super great, but they'll get you in the "ballpark." The good thing is that the president will give you the SWR on the display AND audibly without you touching the radio so you can tune the antenna system and just listen for the beeps. You don't have to be able to see or touch the radio at all. (Very handy when the antenna is on the back of the cab). More frequent beeps the better the SWR. Solid tone signal=1.0 SWR (or somewhere close). When my radio said the SWR was 1.0 on a different truck my SWR meter said it was 1.3. .Ok, close enough.
I found a Volvo at the Loves and it had a stud with an antenna and its own coax. I asked the guy how it worked and he said great. SWR's are low and reception is fine. I ordered a new coax, new door stud and new mount yesterday. It will be at the house when I get home. I already have a new antenna still in the box at the house. OK I am not going to get too technical on this but this is what is called a Common Mode Current, where the coax acts like part of the antenna and when you grab the coax, it added capacitance to the system and changes the SWR.
So here is what I am going to suggest, first order some grounding straps and good coax, DX Engineering is a good place for all of this.
Buy good coax, you don't need a lot, if you have time, do it right, get some clothesline to feed it through where the coax will go to measure out how many feet you need, add a few more, and order it with the ends — even crimp-on ends will work if they are commercially made.
I do not have a recommendation for a mount but it would be a good idea to look at replacing the factory mount.
Whatever you do, don't rip up the factory system out of the truck, the am/fm/XM radio may all use it, it is called a multiplexed system.
After you have the supplies, come back here and search for grounding ideas or get ahold of Craig and/or Night. Follow their instructions.Timin770 and drivingmissdaisy Thank this. -
Yea its definitely multiplexed and it's crap. I ordered brand new coax.

Don't remember what they call that box but it has your am/fm antenna and cb radio running through it. You have run separate coax from your cb to the antenna's to solve your problem's.

If it was me I wouldn't touch anything and run a separate cable up and over the driver's side door and down behind the refrigerator and out through the floor underneath the bunk and under the cab and up the back of the cab on the inside of the fairing and make a metal bracket to attach to the spot where the upper and lower half of the fairing come together and you can use the factory bolts and put a little 3-in ground strap from the metal bracket that you made to the metal bracket that holds the fairing halves together and put the antenna outside the fairing and you should be golden.

Your right, I forgot that jdchet mentioned on another thread that the Volvos were actually metal instead of fiberglass. It would be nice to use an antenna analyzer to get the full picture of your antenna system. But once you install new coax to a single antenna, I'm sure your problems will go away.drivingmissdaisy and Timin770 Thank this.
