Any particular brand or year of truck you’re looking for….?Last Call Thanks this.

Nothing in particular as far as brand, I'm not really brand loyal. Although I will say it likely will not be a Peterbilt unless I'd find a pre 2000 379. That vintage Peterbilt is the last one I kind of liked. Once they went to that goofy plastic dash in 2000 or 2001, then I lost all interest in Peterbilt.
Honestly about the only truck model I'd rule out without question would be a Freightliner Columbia. Or any Sterling.
They're pretty much all the same under the hood, unless it's a Mack. But I definitely want something pre- 2007 or whatever year the DPF became a thing. I know 2003-2007 most engines were boat anchors until people learned how to 'fix' them, and chances are, if I'd buy something from that era, it'd either be fixed already or would be fixed at first hint of trouble.
Whatever it is, it's NOT likely going to be used in an OTR operation, unless my plan would change. I wanna stay local or maybe regional.OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this. -
I wouldn’t rule out sterling or ford for that matter….everyone seems to think I have a bunch of old L series fords because im a “ford man” but really they’re a fairly well made truck that’s just as dependable as the rest and usually way cheaper. I will admit cab parts can be a ##### but usually not something that can’t be found on the internet. The rest is the same vendor parts as everything else. If you’re going to be local or even regional and not have much use for a sleeper you probably should look. Personally I’d put the ltl.9000 as one of the best looking trucks made. I don’t own one yet but am looking for one.
paid 5000 for this one…it’s as clean as they come even dot gives it a blessing and it was paid for by the end of the week…and now paid for about 50x over.JoeyJunk, RedForeman, Ruthless and 3 others Thank this. -
Take this how ever you like
But .. your 1st truck
And are shopping by price and not brand
You best take somebody with you that knows trucks well
Just remember the cheaper the truck the more likely there is goning to be some expenssive suprises
And its less that a 50/50 chance the seller is gona be completely honestVampire, Sons Hero, exhausted379 and 2 others Thank this. -
Not many people are interested in FLD120's but I'd make somebody a great deal on a 1999 flat top that needs a motor. Set up for Detroit. Lots of brand new parts everywhere on the truck. Driveline and suspension bushings all practically new. Has 16 ply Michelin steers and matched 14 ply Goodyear drives knee deep rubber. For somebody that already had a good engine sitting around or knew where to get one it would be a great deal. It comes with a 14L engine that should be a good core, rebuildable. A rod bearing spun and there's paperwork from Clarke Power where they pulled the oil pan and confirmed that's what it was and not a main bearing.

I was actually considering an FLD flattop here very recently. Think it was a 97 but can't remember. Had an N14 with a 10 speed, 3.70 rears. For $13k I'd have taken the risk on it, but had other things going on at home and it was sold before I could jump at it.
We had a 96 with a cat in it here where I work. That truck was a money maker but nobody wanted to drive it because it was so ugly. It was parted out for a glider. -
I have no issues with the Fords, I actually like the LTL 9000. But, as you stated, cab and Ford specific parts are tough to get around the area I live. And the one place I'm sure would have anything I might need I won't do business withJoeyJunk and Mattflat362 Thank this.

Yeah I'm aware of the pitfalls of an older truck. And the chances of a seller being a con artist. Brand loyalty doesn't mean much to me, and I'm certainly not worried about resale vales and such. But I'm not looking to buy some total POS either. While I'm capable of fixing most anything on a pre emission truck, I don't wanna spend half my life fixing stuff either.
This whole idea I have is more of an adventure, if you will. I don't really care about making a bunch of money, it's more about me doing things that I've always dreamed of, after listening to everyone for the last 20 years talking me out of doing things I thought I'd enjoy. Now, here I am at 42 years old wishing I'd have done those things I wanted.
Maybe I could sum this up as a mid life crisis. I dunno. But I've busted my arse all my life, and just wanna enjoy life a bit more. And if that means buying an old truck and slumming it, I'm good with the idea.
I followed NASCAR for a while. Kurt Busch was my favorite driver. He lost his cushy ride and big contract at Penske. Ended up driving for a third tier team afterwards with junk equipment. But he made the comment that he wanted to put the fun back in racing. And it worked well for him. That's kind of where I am I guess. Just wanna put the fun back in driving truck -
I’d consider @rollin coal truck. It is really really nice. I have the same truck, but in opposite condition. New engine but rest of truck is ugly. It’s a work in progress.Vampire, BennysPennys, exhausted379 and 1 other person Thank this.
