There's nothing wrong with a cheap plastic microphone except for the acoustic characteristics of the cheap plastic case.
I'm sure the element is just fine. I'm sure you didn't sweep your transmitter with every frequency within the audio spectrum to see if the distortion was created by the radio itself.
Everything you need to know is in test equipment. -
No Rabbi, you are spliting hairs.
I understand the point that within the audio chain there is distortion created when the amplifiers are for a lack of better terms not tuned properly for the componets used in the design, or the design itself.
What I am countering is the idea that ANY microphone produces a sound quality that has reproduction fidelity going into the pre-amp when in fact many microphones lack the ability to have the dynamic range, equalization of the frequency and introduction of a form of distortion when the signal is transmitted from the mic to the pre-amplifier stage.
Today, most don't even know what distorition sounds like, so it doesn't even matter however the distorition is there at the mic, even more so when there is a very cheaply designed diaphram mic or worst yet a condenser mic that uses actual aluminum foil made in china.
While you brought up Heil, they are not always the best, it is more of a boasting factor than anything else. My RCA M1-10006a is a hell of a lot better than any Heil, and it was cheap to buy. -
I was simply pointing out the distortion created in the RF section which the so-called technician blamed on the microphone. That microphone sounds amazing on every radio that came from Mark's bench. Because Mike is incapable of achieving consistent results, I'm sure things are hit and miss with his customers. There are people in this forum that look up to Mike as he is known. I simply pointed out what Mike blamed on a microphone was due to his lack of skill. He erroneously referred to massive amounts of distortion as a "small amount of distortion".
His customer sounds awful. The problem is clearly visible on Mike's test equipment, but Mike is too stupid to know what he's looking at and he assumes that we are dumber than he is. -
wait ... the RF section or the AF section?Oxbow Thanks this.

No need for test equipment. I can hear the distortion with my own ears. It's not the cheap plastic case creating the distortion, it's the cheap mic element that cobra uses. I can use my uniden and galaxy stock microphones on the same radio, and the distortion is gone. I'm not sure why you can't understand that in this case, the distortion has nothing to do with the radios alignment.

Nonlinear RF section.

Why does it sound great on my radio but awful on yours? It seems like the microphone isn't the problem.

What sounds great on your radio?
