I am not sure if the policy is different on the east coast, but out of Brooks OR, it is 2 to 3 weeks then back to Brooks to solo upgrade. Solo upgrade is another road test and skill test similar to what you take on your first day of orientation. The first test is a pass or go home.
I finally have a pre hire! May Trucking

You are correct on that Bigray, my plan is to do 3 to 4 weeks and home 3 to 4 days. I have a very good support system in place with friends and family for my wife and daughter. Will I miss em, Heck yea but that is the job and as a family we are 100% ready.

Hi "Jb12288" I am considering MAY as my first Company. I am going into my 3rd week of training. After I get my CDL, May Trucking Company looks to be a grate place to start.
Jb12288 Pleas keep on posting about you experience with May good or bad. On the rode, at your home or in the terminal. Keep on posting for the Newbies out there. Keep a running blog.
Snakeskin. The bit about the parking. That is grate stuff. Just the kind of things we all need to know about a prospective company we might like to hire on with. Keep it coming tell us about your adventure starting out with May. Good, Bad or Ugly. Keep a running blog on this thread, and we can see how it stacks up against Jb12288 experience.
If I go with May I will be out of Brooks Oregon as you are Snakeskin. Any info that you post will be much appreciated. Dont disappear if things are going good, or bad for that matter. Keep us posted. -
Thanks Zoolue,
Here is how it has been for me so far;
first, do your best in school, I was there to to do one thing and one thing only, learn to drive, and get my cdl.
second, be honest on your application, i mean transparent, if ya got issues, let May know cause if it comes out later.... your gone.
You will do an online app, and if they see what they like you will get a call or reply to your app via email saying they would like to schedule you for orientation. When you get to brooks, you mmet your recruiter and they turn you over to the gal who does the paperwork on newhires. Then you will do a drug screen and a drive test as well as a skills test. The drive test is in a pete 387 with a 53 foot trailor, out the gate , down the freeway, thru town and country roards then back into the yard. Skills are backing, alley dock, serpentine backing, and a very tight looping 180 degree turn through a obstacle course. If you fail the drive or skills by hitting a curb, being unable to control the truck or not being able to shift..... you go home on your own dime. They expect you to know how to drive when you arrive, after all.... you will have a cdl!
Next day orientation begins and it's about policy, saftey and what is expected of you and what you can expect from them.
sometime on the afternoon of the third day you will meet your trainer and off you go for 2 to 3 weeks,... it is his truck you will be living in so show som respect for it and how he keeps it. Listen, Learn, and above all impress your trainer with a good attitude, and a desire to learn and you will do fine. After your trainning time its back to brooks for a solo upgrade drive and skills test, if ya pass you will get a truck, if you don't you may get another week with a trainer or you may be sent home without a job. It literally depends on you, it is all up to you. Good luck and God Bless!Zoolue Thanks this. -
Thanks for that information, looks like the skills test is a bit more involved than what I read, but still sounds easy enough. I have no problem up or down shifting, alley docking or controlling the trailer; my biggest problem will be my nerves, i am going to be quite nervous.
It seems like I will be waiting another week for a refresher unless this one students decides to quit. The wait is starting to piss me off, as he promised me this week. But life moves on. -
It's easy in Pensacola. Not at all like I've heard in Brooks. If your driver takes you back to Pensacola for your final road test...it's good. If he takes you to Brooks, that guy is a hard ##### and you will more than likely fail.
Be prepared that May is VERY micromanaging. They tell you what routes to run, where to fuel, and on and on and on. I was so excited in the beginning and then the truth hit. Just be prepared for the rose colored glasses to come off.Zoolue Thanks this. -
Well, lets hop I get it in Pensacola LOL

Thanks for the info Snakeskin. That's some "good to know stuff".
Jb12288 How are things going for you? Looking forward on any updates you give. -
road test out of brooks is a NBD, no big deal, proper training and pay attention to what your doing.

Things didnt work out with May so I am leaving Saturday to head up to Cedar Rapids, Ia for CRST. Sorry guys, but I wont be able to update on May besides that I am able to say that the recruiter I talked to was very polite and a pleasure to talk with.
