Can anyone tell me if I can R&R a 3406 crank without pulling pistons and head? I know I need to remove flywheel. Has anyone here done it? Thanks much!

If it is out of the truck it shouldn't be to bad.
In the truck that would add a bit more hassle to the job but nothing that can't be done.

    I'am just curious
How do you plan on pushing the Connecting rods up out of the way without damaging the cooling nozzels ?
And how are you gona get them back down to reconnect them ?
    Just asking ..
What your asking is possible .. but I don't understand what you think your gaining or saving by doing that

I wouldn't do it, seems like a whole lot more trouble than its worth.

I think you could. Still have to pull the engine, front cover, rear structure. You'd have to pull everything that's holding the engine up, to remove the crank. You and a buddy ain't gonna lay under the engine and drop a crank out, if that's what youre thinking.

Then support it upside down complete, after pulling the engine?

Cooling nozzles are held on by 1 bolt, easy removal. But I was thinking the pistons would possibly stay at top basically with vacuum with valves closed. Just wanted to know if crank would clear rods if they were at tdc

May I ask why you are just wanting to drop the crank out of it ?
Not know what its in or what your wanting to do .. I would pull the motor if it was me cause you gona have half the work already done pulling it.to be able to drop drop the crank .. as said you gona pull the front cover and the rear sturcture it alost easier to do that on a stand than in the truck

I'll probably just pull motor. Truck was just inframed very recently. I bought at auction. Someone started it with no oil because of cracked pan. Scored a couple of bearings. To not have to remove head would be a ton less labor. Probably two days less labor by thr time you figure rockers, lines etc.... I'd still pull front cover and cam to check cam bearing and bullgear bearing.

JMHO .. but I would pull the motor and then maybe give a think about trying to do that .. Me .. I would pull the head and pop the pistons out to make sure 1 or some aren't damaged

Sometimes the headache involved to try and save a day just isn't worth it IMO. You usually end up further behind in the end.

Coming apart is easy, getting everything to line back up while trying to hold up a few hundred pounds of crankshaft without marking up parts is where the cussing will start.
