Hi. I'm new and this is my first post, so go easy on me. :(

I recently bought a 1991 Peterbilt 377 dump truck with 30/30 brake chambers, and after getting it home and doing further inspection, I found that the PB spring on the right rear had ruptured the can and was sticking out. Naturally I changed it with another 30/30 chamber, but I found it was VERY difficult to get in because the end edge of the can is hitting one of the leaf spring shackle bolts. I looked at the other side and it is too and has a bit of a dent in it. I'm pretty sure that was the cause of the failure. None of the local parts suppliers were of any help, so here I am.

After exhaustive research looking at specs, etc., the conclusion I've come to is that maybe the truck originally came with 24/30 chambers and were unwittingly changed to 30/30s. 24/30s are smaller in diameter and in my estimation, they would fit perfectly.

My question is, is it safe, acceptable and legal to put 24/30s on it. I'm all for safety and compliance, so anyone who knows, please help!

you didn't happen to find the build sheet on that truck, did you?

on many cars (yes, i know there is a huge difference), the build sheet was under the seat, tucked into the spiral spring.

maybe tucked inside of the owners manual, if that was with the truck? any storage (glove box type) in the dash, door pockets?

the only other "possible" help would come from maybe the factory or a dealer, if you provide the VIN numbers maybe..??

someone will come along in due time.

No owners manual or build sheet. I'm going to try a dealer but everything looks unmodified, so in my mind the only thing it could be is it came with smaller chambers. Thank you. :)

if so, the larger ones "could have" been installed if the original owner hauled heavier stuff.??

I'll probably never know. It's a 1991 tandem dump truck and I don't know how many owners it's had.

Do you know where I can do that other than the dealer?

when i turned wrenches (for 4 wheelers mind you), the parts stores would be able to look up the replacement parts. rather than to just ask for what you want. which could be wrong.

usually too, the date code on the door label is sometimes requested.

if that fails, maybe the factory, it'll be tough, sending them an email, with the VIN, date of build, then waiting for with a response like, "sorry that VIN is no longer in our records", or "sorry we just cannot be of any help to you"...to "here you go"...!!!!!!

Go ahead and get a tape measure out and measure the diameter of the chamber housing on both ends and see what you end up with. You can google "brake chamber diameter chary"
