Yeah, the dog should not have been released. That's pretty obvious, and that cop will probably get fired, or at the minimum, face disciplinary action.

That being said, the officer's screw-up shouldn't negate the driver's previous actions.

You were doing really well until you hit the underlined part. That is simply not true for every scenario.

You could easily find yourself in a shootout with a suspect when they momentarily turn to take cover to get a better shooting position, etc. You absolutely CAN shoot someone running away or turning away from you. Many cops have done it on videos on Youtube and they were not prosecuted. Just because someone momentarily turns their back doesn't mean they are magically no longer a threat. This would ESPECIALLY hold true if they are armed in any way or attempting to arm themselves. They could be turning their back to grab a knife out of the kitchen drawer to stab you with.

You’re taking this a bit further than I intended. There are a million and one different scenarios one can create. But, generally speaking, if the threat is retreating, you can’t shoot them in the back. And, cops don’t follow the same rules, as has been proven many times.

I mean if dude didn't run from the cops . This wouldn't happen.. You know runnin from the cops is pretty stupid.. Especially in a welfare express truck that does like 62 mph on a good day... pick a sports car or a motorcycle or something fast where ya at least have a chance to get away.. I'm sure the media will pick this up and claim racism and there will be protests and cities burned down again.. Nothing like riling up people's hatred toward the police... none of them protestors will actually go get a job though..

I get it. Dude shouldn't have ran. Got it. What I can't understand is that after he surrendered, you mean to tell me ½ a dozen or more cops couldn't move in to apprehend him? They had to go to extreme measures like this? I do not hate the police not one bit because all of them are not a-holes. It's always one bad apple that can sully a reputation for a group. As truckers, we've seen that repeatedly. The guy with the dog has a big ego and felt like he needed to make an example for his own benefit. Taking him to jail wasn't going to satisfy that officer's ego. I don't know much about law enforcement training, but I can't imagine that officers get trained to be violent in a way that pours gas on a fire.

I doubt if the wheelholder had premeditated his bad decisions. However, after 1st spike strip- he clearly had no regard for safety of others.....
So really i m ok with what happened given the amout of time police have to assess the situation on what had happened up to that moment.
For those putting judgement to what you saw.... i say go ahead try and do the job of law enforcement
