    Hi, All.

I am In the market for the 1992 Kenworth T800 with the N-14 engine.

I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with passing the DOT inspection. Is it harder to get an older truck to pass? Do they look more throughly at the truck compared to a newer model. I see shops around that say get your truck DOT ready. Would it be worth to pay for that service. Would appreciate any advice.

    Thank you

I’d suggest reading the extensive threads @Arctic_fox wrote about paying for inspections, doing due diligence, buying a used truck, and everything he has endured since. His is a very sobering story.

Are you talking about a roadside inspection or periodic (annual)?

If you’re talking about periodic inspections it depends on where you go some places and pretty much take the money and give the sticker others look about as hard as dot on a level one and anywhere in between. As far as a roadside inspection yes they will typically look harder at an older truck. From my experience usually if everything looks good from a 10 foot walk around they will let you go regardless of age. If they see something they don’t like it tends to snowball and an older truck tends to invite it, however I still run old stuff just well taken care of.

I just had mine done at a TA and for some reason my brake pads became thicker over the past year..leap year maybe?

Brake lights..didn’t even check but made sure my backup lights worked. Missed another light out on the trailer..

Low air alarm etc..no worries I’m sure it’s all good!

My point is, it all depends on who you bring it to. For me it’s just a waste of money because I know my truck inside and out.

You should know already before bringing it in if it’ll pass.

What brand of brakes were those? I could use a set like that!

I hooked onto a trailer that just had an annual, 3mo prior. Not one single brake shoe touched a drum, all four slack adjusters were seized, and every single bushing in the suspension was completely gone. I struggle to trust any “tech”, these days.

Up here they will go thru the truck front to back, pull all the wheels etc if they're doing it properly. The criteria book for a CVIP is over 2" thick. If there's something wrong, it's not getting passed.

I mean when you buy a used Semi and need to get it inspected by the DOT so you can get the truck registered with your State

What state are you in? I never heard of needing an inspection to get it registered. But I'm sure every state is different ?
