This is what their invitation to school says, Pre work screening, you will be tested to meet our job description. Testing consists of lifting 75 lbs to the waist, 50 lbs overhead, pushing & pulling, climbing, bending and stooping.

Central's physical goes like this (administered by a third party on-site);

They start with a blood pressure test, so come without caffeine and sugar!

Next, they strap a heart monitor to your chest and a linked display to your wrist (looks like a watch). You take a crate with fifty pounds of weight and walk with it a measured distance. They check your heart rate on completion. Next, they up the weight to seventy-five pounds. Wash, rinse and repeat.

Next, you go over to a shelf (waist-level) and take the same type of crate with fifty pounds, remove it from the shelf, squat to the ground and replace it three times. Once you've done this, the weight is increased to seventy-five pounds. After this test, you repeat the process though this time, you place the crate over your head and on to the top shelf. Again, your heart rate is measured after each exercise.

The next exercise, you have a device that measures pulling power. You hook the device to an eyelet on the wall and pull to a certain pressure. After a heart rate check, you use a similar device to measure pushing power.

That's it. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes. Hope this helps.

JustSonny Thanks this.

I think the target heartrate is somewhere below "Cardiac Arrest," but I'm not sure. I mean, look at some of our drivers and tell me their heartrate didn't jump during that...

As for the unloading question, no, you rarely have to unload yourself. I choose to for the extra money and the workout, but I usually wuss out and only unload when I only have less than 10 different products in the box. My dock organizational skills suck. Put me on the dock with 25 different products, and you'll see a fat man carrying 60lb cases of chicken halfway across the warehouse cuz he doesn't know how to arrange his pallets efficiently.

And no, they won't pay you what they would pay a lumper. Wouldn't that be nice? They will pay you $16/hr, and that's only after you submit a mac53, and a receipt with your name, truck number, trailer number, load number, stop number, address, social security number, po number, phone number, hair and blood sample, date, signature, deed to your house, and adoption papers for your firstborn. Leave anything off, and your po gets retracted. Please enjoy the payroll dance, the music will start shortly.

Im looking to go to Central in October. (Yeah an AZ Girl in a cold city the start of fall YIKES!!!) Im excited. I know that at the moment I cant do to 50# above my head but I can carry it from one end of a room to the other and lift almost to my neck. I have been doing as much reasearch as I possibly could with all the different companys that train. I was hoping to go to Prime but they wont pair female trainees with male trainers (Thats Crap) Oh well. I thing the weight part of this stinks but I shouldnt complain atleast they are giving me a chance.

Just work out a little between now and then, sounds like you already are.
The "work well" test has gotten pretty standard in the industry the last few years. I do not know of any large company that is not using it.
But it is rare that I hear of anyone failing it for the weight. Normally it is due to blood pressure or other issues.

There is a formula that is used to determine target heart rate. It is basically done by age. Your target heartrate is 85% of what your max heart rate is on the scale. A basic scale is this:

AGE............... Target 50-85% ..........Maximum 100%

20 years 100-170 beats per minute 200 beats per minute

25 years 98-166 beats per minute 195 beats per minute

30 years 95-162 beats per minute 190 beats per minute

35 years 93-157 beats per minute 185 beats per minute

40 years 90-153 beats per minute 180 beats per minute

45 years 88-149 beats per minute 175 beats per minute

50 years 85-145 beats per minute 170 beats per minute

55 years 83-140 beats per minute 165 beats per minute

60 years 80-136 beats per minute 160 beats per minute

65 years 78-132 beats per minute 155 beats per minute

70 years 75-128 beats per minute 150 beats per minute

For example, I am 36, my target heart rate is 157 bpm. In the world of your heart, as far as cardio goes... you should be working out for 1 hour per day at your target heart rate. This is very healthy for your heart. The reason is that if you work out an hour a day at your target heart rate... when your heart is resting (basically when you are sitting around doing nothing) it should be working at optimum.

If you are out of shape it does not take long for your heart rate to sky rocket once you start doing something. When I first went to cardiac rehab... my heart rate jumped from 80 to 100 just from walking across the room. A good tip is to make sure you eat something like a PB&J sandwhich and drink atleast a few glasses of water before the tests. The water will not only help your bp but it will help keep your heart rate down. If you drink lots of caffeign then I recommend that you dont drink any the day before and the day of the test. Drink alot of water the day before and the time just before you go. A dry heart will produce a higher heart rate. If you are thirsty then you already have a dry heart.

You have to bend, squat, carry 75 pounds for about 100 feet. Lift a crate with the 50 lb above your head, the same crate with 75 lb to your wate. All while keeping your heart rate down. Just remember to BREATHE! it helps. you have to pull 100 lb and push 100 lb. You have to climb to the second step on a ladder 10 times. And you must balance on either foot for 10 seconds.

I was going to team with my wife. She did everything in the work well test except for being able to push 100 lb. She got sent home :( We wasted $100 that they make you fork out right up front.

The trick with the pull and the push is that you have to use as much ballistic force as you can. You cannot lean into it. You really have to get a good hard fast push.
To me from a work standpoint I think the pull is more important than the push.
I am surprised that they would not let a retry.
