I have a Green APU with about 1400 hours. This thing has been great. However it shut off last night and the control box says “Run Failure.” I’m wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them? It will start and run for about 30 seconds and shut down. I want to try to fix it myself if possible. It is under warranty but I don’t want to sit at a shop waiting on someone else to fix it if I can do it myself. Thanks….

First check the fuses. Second check to ensure its getting coolant and has oil and there is nothing in the oil (forbidden ice cream). Could be if you have run it low it shut off. Or if the water pump failed it overheated. Next check the fuel filters. If you have been doing oil only it may have clogged. Check the terminal connections to the unit to ensure it has power going in and coming out. Also check that the alt is produceing power if it will start. Also check that you didnt accidently close a coolant line. They also had a recall on some of the control boxes you may have gotten one of those or one with the old software which would need an update.

Beyond that you can call the number on the control unit and they can walk you through checking the codes. There is a SMALL chance its a larger problem though.

First things first. I have been running close to home so no overnight in the truck. This follow up post would have been sooner if I had to sleep in this heat. After talking it over with tech support at Green APU and going through all their diagnostic testing “over the phone of course.” It was determined that the oil sensor was most likely faulty. They sent out a new one and I installed it. It was still doing the same thing. It ran for about five seconds and shut down. I got on the phone with the engineer of Green APU and he went through all the scenarios with the unit with me over the phone. I’ve had these people on the phone for probably an hour troubleshooting this thing. After installing an oil pressure sensor burning my arm and cutting myself about twenty times. It turns out to be the wire that connects to the sensor. Right at the end you could see a small piece of wire sticking out from the rest of the wiring. Best guess is when the unit turned on an started vibrating it was possibly touching something. Either way I give props to the tech people at Green for walking me through all the scenarios that it could be without pushing to get off the phone. But, I really think they could do a better job at making these connections better from the start. This is the second connector that I’ve had to change myself because of their bad design from Green APU. Im writing this to possibly help someone else out down the line. Don’t wait on a sensor. Pull the casing from around the sensor wiring and tape it up tight or add a new connector. Chances are I won’t be the only one that has this problem.
