Class B is a straight truck, weight restricted. Class A is tractor-trailer, not weight restricted.

The Cass B is not weight restricted. A person with a Class B can not operate a trailer with a weight over 10,000 pounds just like a regular Drivers License. However, they can operate any single vehicle of any rated weight.
I think I understand what you mean, in my opinion, you did not express it clearly! I only brought it up because there are a lot of people that do think there are rated weight restrictions on Class B.ducnut and Gridaxe5588 Thank this. -

CDL B only required to operate this on a public road, weighs 132,000.CDL A if you hook up to a trailer.
cke, ducnut and Gridaxe5588 Thank this. -
Not quite correct. A hotshot rig would be a Class A as well as a straight truck pulling a trailer (think dump with equipment trailer) is also a Class A. Those will have an O restriction which specifically prohibits driver from driving tractor trailer.ducnut and Gridaxe5588 Thank this.

If you take a truck with a trailer, you will get a Class A with the O restriction. You won't be able to drive a tractor-trailer.
That being said, you would've had to take the written for combination and done the ELDT theory for Class A. If your permit doesn't say Class A, you won't be able to test with a trailer behind the straight truck. If you didn't take the ELDT theory for Class A, you won't be able to test with a trailer either.
Testing with this (without the excavator), would get you a Class A with an O restriction:Last edited: Aug 7, 2023
