Hey all, if you remembered a couple weeks ago I posted while I was in trucking school. Well, I passed my test with flying colors, only had the whistle blown at me during the backing maneuvers test once during parallel park because I was over the line on the other side. Got my CDL-A on Tuesday.
I've been job searching all day trying to fill out applications for megas but they all need me to be 21+ years of age. I'm only 20 and I got a few months to go. I finally called a small family owned dump truck asphalt business and they said they can start me at 8 AM Monday and start with $150 a day. Seems pretty low, but it seems that's my only option and Allan Myers doesn't have any job openings in Delaware. I figure I should settle for driving a dump truck until I gain experience and turn 21, stay with the job for a year+
Been job searching, family owned dump truck business??

A young Man?
Try the beer distributors, sodas, liquor, brick and lumber yards, dumpster service and food service. Take a warehouse job (make sure it pays better than the dump truck) to get your foot in the door (insurance may not allow them to hire an inexperienced driver, but they can hire you and transfer you to a driving job). Build a name based on an outstanding work ethic, avoid the negative people and the negative talk, and remember who it was that gave you the chance to get started driving.
One more thing, you will have people around you that work with you that will try to push your buttons, in particular about your age. Keep silent. Do not respond. Never allow anyone to push your buttons. No one needs to know anything about your personal life, so keep your privacy 100%. You can be the most talented driver in world history but if you lose your shiP, you’re still sunk.
Luck in battle.88 Alpha, AModelCat, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this. -
Contact DOT again and tell whoever you talk to you're ready to roll.

Who do I contact exactly? Their headquarters in Illinois or the place I applied for up in Bear Delaware?Chinatown Thanks this.

Dump Truck driving will only halfway teach someone how to control weight and then some other very niche skills such as gravel spreading, dumping in a paver, etc.. It won't do much good for class A work in the future.
I'm not saying don't do it -- I thought dump trucking was fun and satisfying, but don't do it under the presumption that the experience will benefit you in the class A world in 99% of cases besides weight. Insurance companies usually only except class A experience.
That pay is low regardless though, but if it works for you, that's totally your call. I'd look for 200-250/day at least for Class B work whether it's hourly, salary, or flat rate daily. -
Be sure to tell DoT (or whoever)...that you're a big boy now (you have your CDL)...& you no longer need your milk & cookies & a bed-time story....

Big Road Skateboard Thanks this. -
When they hook a trailer up to the dump to haul the paver and other stuff he's good to go with a Class A.
I'd be asking for a raise after day 3.
