I have a 2021 Western Star 4900 with a DD16, and the starter will engage for about half a second before it cuts out. The key is still in "engine start" position (engine is not running at this point). This will happen 4 out of every 5 times I try to start the truck. All the inputs and outputs seem to be fine, I've installed a new starter, I've put in my spare ECU to test, and the problem persists. Im running out of ideas. Has anybody come across this before?

What transmission do you have? Is this setting any codes?

It has an Eaton 18Spd. No codes.

Could be a bad ground cable connection. Every starter needs a good independent ground strap to the truck frame to work. Check that connection. May be loose or corroded. It doesn’t take much to cause starter to go dead when it draws all those cca’s from the batteries.

switch on the clutch pedal maybe
