What do you actually check on a pre-trip inspection?

I see two apparent contradictions. So I am confused.

On post #4 wichris said that there are no seals on the outside, only gaskets. Then you said that hub oil is on the outside. If hub oil is on the outside, but there are no seals on the outside, where do I check for a hub oil seal leak? I'm confused.

On post #4, wichris said that there are only gaskets on the outside. Then you say that it's very wrong thinking to look for axle gasket leaks on the outside of drive wheels. I don't know if you are saying that I should look for axle gasket leaks on both the outside and the inside of drive wheels, or if you are saying that I should only look for axle gasket leaks on the inside of drive wheels.

I have seen the splatter on the outside of drive wheels before too. I have always reported the splatter to breakdown, and neither breakdown nor the mechanics ever corrected me when i described the splatter on the drive wheels as an axle gasket leak.

Sounds like a scam to me! Probably only works on the outside rims. Then they make you buy the adapter for the inside rims. Highway robbery!

Hubs or axles are on the outside and have gaskets. Inside there's bearing seals.

Oil can leak from either side.

Leaks on the outside make a mess of the rim. Inside leaks soak the brakes.

No drivers at the mega carrier I drive for know how to adjust their brakes. The only people at the mega carrier that I drive for that know how to adjust the brakes are mechanics.
