2023 freightliner Cascading DD15 Gen 5 14.8 liters.
My question is how much fuel is used if you idle at 900 rpm’s. Now I see people say it’s a gallon per hour but I don’t think rpm’s and type of engine was factor into that. I believe that every truck is different so that 1 gallon per hour I wouldn’t think is the minimum standards. Let me know!

2022 579 with the MX13 and idling at 700 mine says .7 gallons per hour. If it’s cold and it’s idling at 1000 it usually says 1 to 1.2 gallons per hour. When it’s at 1000 with a load on the engine to warm the dpf it says 2 gallons per hour but the warmup only lasts 30 minutes.

My Volvos, several different ones, showed an idle fuel consumption around 1/3 gallon per hour. I think my 2020 KW T680 with big inverter showed around 0.5 - 0.7 gph at idle. 1 gph is probably the high-end of estimates, not the low-end. Manufacturers have seen tehir customers care about MPG for decades, there is not going to be a wide difference between most trucks. The trucks that are specced to drag a battleship up Pike's Peak or for 12 MPG are not going to be the same but 90% of trucks will be very close.Bean Jr., Albertaflatbed and John_IronClad Thank this.

Even at only 1gph, if you sit for a 10 hour break you are tossing 45 dollars a night out of the window.

That’s the beauty of buying my own fuel. I can decide if I want to be comfortable or not. However very rarely do I idle for the entire night and that’s part if the reason why I can’t pencil out spending $15k for an APU.

Or spending money to prevent the driver not crushing 4 wheelers due to fatigue.Canadianhauler21, gentleroger, RockinChair and 2 others Thank this.

How much does a call to boost a frozen truck cost?

I agree with you on that one. I won’t buy one. By the time I make it pay for itself it’ll probably need to be rebuilt. Helps to work in the Midwest often where it can cools off at night.Last edited: Sep 20, 2023

Have you priced a APU lately ? And I have my doubts you burn much more than .5 gph so thats 22.50 for ten hrsSpeedy356, Oxbow, cke and 1 other person Thank this.

Nice thing about being a company driver. Fuel doesn't cost me a cent. Though I don't idle if I can get my rest without it.tscottme, Oxbow, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this.
