It doesn’t even cost that when you don’t have payments. Utilities are roughly $200 a month, no cable or streaming services, no WiFi, Verizon is $180 a month, and then groceries. We buy half a beef from my nephew and usually some pork from the locker. So it’s real easy for even a dumb man like myself to get by out here.

Lol that was not my intention . I guess I was thinking what kind of jobs are available an hour away from civilization in Nebraska that pay over $40k and couldn't think of any besides truck drivers

Moving closer to I-80 was one of the best choices I made. Up home if you don’t run doubles and have 13 or more axles on the ground you have no shot at any in state stuff. Before rates took a dump a year ago I had no problem getting into and out of the house between Thermo King in Hastings and Overhead Door in Grand Island. But after things went off the cliff it’s made more sense for me to bounce 3 hours home from our customer and bounce 3 hours back out instead of hauling broker stuff.

If you do hazmat and stuff a guy could kill it around here and only have to work about 6 months a year if you managed your money well when anhydrous was going like crazy.

Look, I don't know why you and some other people here got their feelings hurt so much when I said that country folks are less educated.
I did not call anyone dumb, it's just the reality of life. Living in the country you get worse schools and teachers than somebody who lives in a Metro. I, myself, came from a tiny city/village environment and I did not see a single kid who can play piano or talk about astrophysics while I was growing up. Only when I went to college, there was a realization of how far behind we were.
I really don't understand why you guys keep arguing and getting upset about it.

Here's a nice little place. There's not a tremendous amount of high paying jobs around here, but if you were a truck driver, you could definitely make it work. Actually, you could probably make it work on one paycheck. I would imagine, all in with insurance and taxes, your nut would be around $600 a month. There's lots of potential in this place. Do it $200 - $500 at a time, and in no time you'll have a really nice place.
My house was built in 1960, and that was pretty much the last time anyone did anything to it. So, I took it one room at a time and after a while, I had a place that I was comfortable in and was proud of.

You’re correct. You judge success in different ways than I do. To me, success is financial freedom and not being burdened by debt and payments. To me success is making sure I’m not forced to work. I’d say there are more successful small business owners that come from rural areas as a percentage of the population than doctors that come from metro schools as a percentage of the population. And a bright kid is going to be a bright kid no matter where they are from, it’s up to the parents to guide them in the right direction. Everyone has access to the same colleges all across the country. You make blanket statements that aren’t true, then try and walk them back a little when presented with personal experiences from other members, then act like you didn’t say what you said.

Like I said in the other post, we’re in the same industry doing the same thing. When a child comes from a mostly debt free home (I did have a payment on the new truck) and sees how the parents handle money and sees that debt isn’t necessary to live and sees that if they make good choices that it’s possible to have a family with a single income and then that child goes to college or even *gasp* a trade school and it’s all paid for and they graduate and get a start in life with a good job and no student debt then I see that as a good thing. Like I said, you see success differently than I do.

You obviously only hear what you want to hear. Living close to the city it's not about prestige, it's just a better quality of life.
Living in a Metro you can easily go to museums, theaters, kids can pick any sports activity they like, music classes, better teachers, hospitals, meet different people from different cultures, just whatever.
I for example, after driving the whole week, like to play soccer and go to fancy gym on the weekend. What would I do in the middle of Nebraska in a tiny village? Go to a local bar and drink with the same 10 people who never read a book in their life? No thanks, I'd rather pay my $5500 property tax and have a $1200 mortgage
