Probably yes, assuming balanced weight or drives heavier than trailer. If the trailer was heavier than the drives, it would probably shift less, but tandem placement is almost a non factor.

The biggest issue is no strap in front of the rear set of rolls. Almost no roll stock has this, and it's a problem in my opinion. The best paper mills band the rear set of rolls together. While this is the sensible answer, it's like asking people not to pee in the pool - never gonna happen.

Under most circumstances, the skid mats will keep the rolls from moving, provided there is at least 3 inches sticking out. Too many loaders put down the skid mat and then place the roll directly on top, so when the roll tries to move, there's nothing to stop it. If the mat sticks out a couple inches, as the roll tries to move the mat will resist and wedge up, creating a virtually insurmountable barrier. So they'll move an inch or so, but that's it. It's one of the reasons why I tend to toss myself back on the scale at the end of the first day with roll stock and see if anything moved.

However, in most cases where we have rolls shift, there are no skid mats at all.

Think of roll stock like hauling pipes - if all the dunage is set properly, and the driver secures the load, it's not going anywhere even under strenuous braking. But if any of the dunage breaks or shifts, the driver is going to have a heck of an issue in any driving conditions.

I don't know what you're answering yes to here. So I don't know how to respond to it. Your post must be responding to someone I have on ignore, but I learned from the post.

I've been trucking for nine years, and I have never seen a paper mill band the rear set of rolls together. I agree that I should strap the rear set of rolls. I will do so from now on.

My load of rolled paper that shifted had skid mats on it since I picked it up at the shipper. But I did not initially have the rear set of rolls strapped.

A strap around the back won't do anything to stop the problem you had, and you aren't getting in front of the rear set to create a bulkhead strap.

Rock-Tenn used to band the rolls together, as did Escanaba and Appleton Coated. Very few do anymore.

And no, you didn't have skid mats in properly, otherwise the rolls wouldn't have moved that much.

How do you know that I could not get in front of the rear set to create a bulkhead strap? How do you know that there was not room in the trailer to get in front of the rear set of rolls of paper?

Rock-Tenn was the very first shipper I went to in my entire career. Rock-Tenn did not band the rear rolls together when I first started trucking in 2012.

If you could, then the rolls were loaded wrong and you should only have moved it back to a dock.
