The Old Bruce's Truck Stop/Bakersfield,Ca.

Bruce's had a Bar/Restaurant adjacent to the stop called the Scotsman. Food was really good. And the bar was too. After the state banned smoking inside, and in the workplace, the bar partitioned off a room with mostly glass walls so you could see the bar. The "smoking" room was usually crowded with drivers. Since the bartender could not enter the room as doing so would make the room part of the workplace, you had to go into the bar and order for yourself. Drivers would take care of emptying the ashtrays and tossing the garbage. Sometimes they would even run the vacuum.
I spent many evening there and have never seen a setup like that anywhere.

 

Spent many a night there. Bruces also had another location in Buttonwillow.
