Agreed. My 6 month stint on 1099 wasn't a horror story. Just a little bit of intuition and it's possible to find a decent opportunity. I made a decent wage after setting aside taxes, 80mph truck, logs weren't falsified, and I was home 8 or so days a month. Got brought lunch every time I drove past the terminal. I averaged around 7000/mo before taxes. Even after taxes, it's close to on par with what a lot of home weekend W2 positions offer. It's not setting any records for pay, but it wasn't horrible given my circumstances.
I prefer the stability and structure of an established W2 carrier, but I'd much rather do that 1099 gig than run for pennies at Carolina Cargo or Western Express.Last edited: Sep 1, 2023

I started with Western Express back in 2010 a d my experience there wasn't one of the terrible ones that everyone has. Yeah the cpm wasn't great, but they made up for it with miles, miles, and more miles. It could be hard to get home at times, but I had some good paychecks there. In those days, they were so outlaw though. They had so much freight it was crazy. I did 1099 for 6 years, and there were occasional bad spots but like you, my experience wasn't terrible either. I worked for 2 different companies, but the thing is, I knew what I was getting into before I got into it. It was only meant to work long enough for me to get straight. It's better working for an established carrier with contract freight, or ones that have tremendous relationships with brokers, and can get regular freight.

People rehab their careers however necessary. It's only illegal if you get caught lol. In all seriousness, you're entitled to your feelings on it. It worked for me, and I used them, just like they used me and other drivers. Got what I needed and got out.

Just because your 1099 doesn't mean you don't pay taxes.
You just have the option.
So anyone saying w2 is better let them think that.
If I make 100k 1099 and pay 10k to 15k when you have an account do your taxes if you keep all your write offs it is legal.
Don't get all defensive saying stuff is illegal because if your a single person no dependent and make 100k you have to pay almost 30k a year you do you.
