That's where the sunk cost fallacy comes into play.
They think "I've already spent $10, I just need to keep going and I'll be in the black soon".
In the Flatbed Shame thread a few weeks ago there was a video of a guy trenching a lawn and messing up his bumper in the process. He KNEW he was doing something dumb, but kept doing it because he thought it was the best way out. How many times have you watched a guy compounding his error while backing into a spot? Dude thinks "if I can just wiggle it a little I'll clear", and spends 20 minutes trying to force it in when he could just pull out and get a better line. It's the same basic idea, just with finances.
Rates are crashing and fuel to the moon!

lot of people have trouble backing up from a problem and seeing the bigger picture
I have been guilty of it myself a time or ten/
The most glaring that comes to mind is the first time I ordered 2 new trailers, they didn’t come in by year end: I thought “well I’m not paying for these #### things they said they’d be in by eoy I’ll show them, they ain’t getting my money til I have them in my yard”
Yah. Stupid. Costed me extra in income tax to do that, when I had VIN #’s and everything they just hadn’t shown up at the dealer yet; but they did show up shortly thereafter. I gained nothing but a bigger tax obligation by not paying for them and putting them on paper. Stupid.
i have made some stupid mistakes over my lifetime: if I don’t learn from them I can never achieve more with the knowledge of what that mistake cost me, whether from ease of use, time, money, simplicity, or larger vision.
Those of us with kids; you try and teach them things you know or have learned, to get them ahead of the curve. In that attempt we are trying to encourage them to be smarter than we were at that same age.
Smart people learn from the mistakes of others; average people learn from their own mistakes; fools make the same mistake over and over, having learnt nothing.
wish I would have done more listening at a younger age-Diesel Dave, PSM379, MACK E-6 and 11 others Thank this. -
Rates have been stable on my end, with the exception of S.Texas. Terrible there. Where is home?Siinman and Rideandrepair Thank this.

Northwest Arkansas. Tyson is struggling right now and you can definitely tell just from the lack of volume coming and going. It’s just a domino effect.Constant Learner, Siinman and Rideandrepair Thank this.

If you can make it… Cheese from WI to the MO caves is a decent bet right on revenue per mile. That should take you home….if WI is in your lane…Last edited: Oct 6, 2023
Siinman and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Ya, we’ve definitely hauled our fair share of cheese back home. You’re right it isn’t paying at all. Rates should be bursting at the seems out of there with the potato crop shipping but just isn’t. Rates are component of volumes and there’s just not enough to drive any meaningful increases. I’ve had an ok year so I’m not complaining but just seems the past few weeks someone had flipped the volume switch to off.JonJon78, Siinman, Oxbow and 1 other person Thank this.

Sorry I typo. Corrected it. I meant it’s paying decent currently.WI-MO.Siinman, Oxbow and Rideandrepair Thank this.

No doubt it can happen to the best of us to a degree. But most of us that have any business being in business can see that this situation is crazy.
although I guess the more I think. About it it might not be. Just weird to me for a trucking company to do it that long. My ex company I worked for had lost lots of money for a year because of a few mistakes of doing business over seas and not getting paid. So it can happen but the multiple years still messing with me trying to understand.Ruthless, Oxbow, Jubal Early Times and 2 others Thank this.
