Sitting at home with a nasty little toothache.

Went to the dentist friday morning to have him tell me I have 2 options.
    1. root canal for $900
    2. extraction for $140 but will need work in the future i.e. bridge etc

I still have a "baby premolar" next to the tooth in question, so when that leaves (dont know when) I'll have 2 teeth missing out of the bottom row on the right side. My sister still has the same "baby premolars" and she is 3 years older then I. So I dont think I'll need to worry about it for a few years. She is the office manager of a local orthodontist.

I'm thinking that I'll just get it pulled and worry about the additional work when I have insurance and a paycheck (still a student). The savings I have could cover the $900 but it's a lot of money that I dont really want to spend in 1 chunk.

But right now I'm on antibiotics to kill the infection, and Tylenol 3. I was hoping for T4, but the 300mg of codeine takes care of the paint pretty well, it just doesn't last very long.

I usually just soak a sore tooth with brandy,.......

It kills the pain and helps me sleep,...

I learned my lesson the hard way by ignoring my teeth. I took good care of them but hate the dentist. Well I had 2 small cavities that I let go....for 10 yrs! It gave me an abcess in the root, no words for the pain that caused me. Took antibiotics too. Also learned if you let an abcess go, well literally it will and can kill you, no joke. I got that tooth pulled. About 2 months later bam the other cavity I let go...another abcess. I found a thing called Care Credit, credit for dental and other procedures. Decided to save that molar, got the root canal, going back for my crown next week. I also learned it's not a good thing for your mouth to just get teeth yanked if they go bad. You will have more problems later in life. I also let my wisdom teeth come in which I had no room for and it cracked 2 molars of which I'm getting removed next week too.
I have 2 baby teeth too, my upper eye teeth, no biggie, some people live their whole life with some baby teeth.
Take your antibiotics and take care of those teeth, it's way more serious than I thought. Past few months have been hell, but I got all the serious issues taken care of with that loan from Care Credit. My dentist offered 1 year no interest with them.

Also another good thing for tooth pain, you can take 2 Aleve and 1 Extra Strength Tylenol at the same time. They work on different parts of your brain for pain relief and you can safely take them together. My dentist took the time to explain this to me. I had a root canal with just local numbing and afterwards that's all I needed for pain.
After the extraction I had though I got vicoden. But only needed that for about a day and a half afterwards.

Just get it pulled, and if you want the work done later, get it. I had the same problem, doc tried giving me the 'you need a root' done, I told him to pull the #######, and the next day I was driving again.

Great advice! Swaps, do everything you can to save the tooth. It would be great to save the cost of the root canal and crown, but save the tooth if at all possible. CareCredit is a good idea but not all dentists, oral surgeons, orthos will accept it. Paperwork issue, I guess. Ask your sis.

Swaps I would go the cheapest route. If your having tooth trouble and your not otr driving yet. Your problebly going to have numerous teeth pulled. I,m off for a few days and on my 2nd bottle of antibiotics, sunday the Dr. put me on 2 different antibiotics. I had a 3 tooth bridge pulled, infections into the bone, ear, head, blood stream, if this doesn,t work I,ll have to check into the hospital and be on an iv. Yeah the good old days of running 38 to 48hrs. straight, is hell on your teeth. The bridge was 14 years old, I also had numerous crowns pulled, including gold crowns. If you want to be a truck driver you have to expect rotten teeth. Best of Luck

Try Advil. Not one or two. If you have to take about 4-5. Will kill pain where you can function. My dentist gave me some 600 mg ones and told me to do this. Worked better than the Tylenol w/codeine. Same as 3 regular. Good luck. Those #### teeth hurt like nothing else.

It was pulled last Monday, had no pain after maybe 4-5 hours after the Novocaine wore off. No real issues. Had the suchers pulled today. everything feels fine. Just need to finish the antibiotics like the dentist said, and I should be perfect, minus 1 tooth.

It would've been nice to keep it, but it would've just been way too expensive.

Once I get some dental insurance, and an income I'll worry about getting a bridge/more work done. Until then, I just need to get back in the habit of brushing TWICE a day and flossing more.

I never thought of the Hydrogen Peroxide thing. I'm going to assume that it tastes horrible though.

I started using 50/50 mix of water peroxide before bed after brushing. Mainly to get rid of moose mouth when I woke up. It works. Just gargle for a while and rinse a few times. Cheap and works. 1st couple of times I swallowed some and it is nasty. Dentist said it kills bacteria that cause odor and decay. So far so good. Been doing it about 4 months.
