I'm trying to gauge a good business model locally for a couple different routes I'd want to take long term.
Trying to find out about some numbers regarding owner operators for straight trucks.
Just trying to see what lane of Class B I'd want to go down. I've drove dump before, have good connections in that industry. A relative who has said company as a mutual friend claims they'd pay about $150 an hour to do either dump or roll off for them. But unconfirmed.
Currently running Class B septic but not O/O.
Trying to compare what others make running Class B owner operator - and what do you run? Is it worth it to you?
My concept is I'm either going to lease or buy TWO vehicles, in the chance one breaks down I can use the other until the one is fixed.
I'm thinking about buying 2 trucks, getting them in running condition (depends on what I decide to do) - don't need any newer truck, and putting about $20 - $30,000 in reserve. Not many business models exist for this.
Thanks.
Any Class B O/O's? (Dump etc?)

The reason many business models exist is because it doesn’t work, 500k on the average dump truck is like 2 million on a road tractor, you might get lucky and find an owner driven one that’s done nothing but paving or dirty dirt, but that’s going to cost almost as much as a new one
do you own a big pile of dirt you need to move? Do you have machines to load/spread? If not you might want to look for a dump trailer, At least then you can hook up and do something else when the locals squeeze you out
the septic might not be bad but you’ll definitely burn the bridge where you are and if they have more then one truck and are established they will just #### with you until your out
local construction work takes cut throat to a whole new level, and some of it is just out of spite to keep whoever the established owner doesn’t like outmowmow1 Thanks this. -
Another idea I had was residential demolition, seems like there is a lot of supply in Cleveland and surrounding.
I'd have to get a machine + trailer + a decent sized dump to do that, but I've no idea about that industry.
Drove an International Tandem with 1 mill + - she leaked oil like crazy but boy she ran good!
I was also thinking if I did the roll off thing, we have a lease in my area for the new Palfinger Hooklift roll offs. But the truck is nearly 300,000 and even if I did combo of residential/commercial dumpster rentals, that 300K would kill my profits.
Another thing if I was only contracting for a company moving dirt etc, would it be all year?
As far as the dump trailer thing, I'm honestly no longer interested in driving tractor-trailer.
Thanks for your replies ! -
New guy will be last one called and the first one gone depending on where you are, around here it’s usually April to November, the senior guys they will call back a little early to start stocking up, probably 7 months, unless you want to haul salt, but that pays about the same as McDonald’s even if it’s a snowy/cold winter

I grossed 100k per year with my Pete 362 tandem axle straight flat doing 3 loads per week....sometimes 4. I am debating now if I should try and do it again.

I intended on staying in the septic type of company until I'm ready to see what's next, but it's a major franchise that deals with septic type of rentals. They exclusively (I, included) only work/clean their products. Nothing residential, strictly commercial rental.
And I know how that construction is. I'll take my chances if I have to go that route, but that's why I'm trying to weigh all my options doing Class B. Just don't think I want to do Class B dryvan, air freight is really over saturated here and I didn't like white glove service. Amazon Box Truck Relay or whatever seems to be some sort of scam, guys making only $1000 a week post deductions, not worth it.
Leaning towards specialized work really. -
Post a picture of it bro! Why'd you give it up if you don't mind me asking? -
I didn't give it up as of yet! Just took a year off to work local and then I will reevaluate. Went to 2 paint shops today for some freshen up quotes....I keep up 100% on all mechanicals so she is ready to go when I am.
