I am looking forward to this forum. I grew up in trucking from the age of 3, (1969) in Souther California, in a trucking co called Harris Transportation, who hauled out of Death Valley and other places, and seen what real drivers were.
I am saddened now that drivers don't even carry a flashlight, much less tools. Does not matter, many have no desire to learn to use them anyway.
I am a firm believer that anyone can drive a truck, but not everyone can be a truck driver.
So we should ask ourselves this, "What do we want the trucking industry to become?"
Can we once again become the "White Knights of the highway?"
Take some work, but I believe we can educate the men and women in the future of what it really means to be a "Truck Driver", not just someone who drives a truck.

Welcome to the forum, 54kenworth -- I like how you think! It's always nice to welcome veteran drivers here as we have lots of rookies who can benefit from your experience and advice. (That's not saying we don't have plenty of long-time drivers with whom you can swap stories!) We look forward to getting to know you... so jump right in and join us!

Yes it is! My dad is Al Ross, and I grew up around Jim Pardue, Charlie, and a host of others. Learned many things. I live in Oklahoma on what was Glen Harris', now Melvins property.

    Small world huh?

Hartnett Truck Co. in Adelanto was owned by one of my good friends parents and they were pretty tight with the H&H folks (back then the H&H fleet was 100% Mack)

My step dad hauled sand and powder around here for the better part of 50 years, pulled a lot of Trona loads too. Never worked for Harris though.

    Wow memories ...........

    WELCOME to you, 54KW.

I read, and especially like the part of your post that I've quoted above.
To make identification easier, I group drivers this way,.......
    WannaBee
    NewBee (Student)
    Rookie
    Big truck truck driver
    and
Big truck trucker ---- being the top rung of the ladder.
On the very bottom of said ladder are the
    Steering Wheel Holders.

I have friends in Terral, OK. and Stringtown, OK, formerly a famous town for speed traps.
But the State of Oklahoma put a halt to that money generating practice.
(Also home town of Reba, where her father, brother and sister still run a workin' cattle ranch, and Reba still helps out during round-up, brush poppin' --- on a quarter horse, no doubt.
They hang out at Choo Choo's Restaurant.
Are you domiciled anywhere near there?

Welcome 54Kenworth! What does it mean, in your opinion, to be a "truck driver"? And what has happened to trucking during your years in the industry?

    Baack Thanks this.
