Pretty much the best way to do it. If everything looks good then turn it on. If it blows again you got a short or bad alt. Run a alt test on it before doing a full run though. Also with belts on APUs ive found its best to change them every 6 months. The bests are fairly cheap and it prevents issues. That said if you blew the fuse there is likely a reason for it.

Not what i woulda expected but fair enough. Least it was an easy fix.

Yea I still know very little about APUs, probably shouldve inspected the ac compressor as well but didnt even think of that, was focused on the alternator. Just thought I updated on here so if anyone in the future maybe has the same issue - they know some places to look. And thanks for the help as well88 Alpha Thanks this.

No problem. And dont worry im not great with em either. But when you literally own the stupid thing you pick up a few things. That said i know much more about my green then i ever did my thermocantmhlvc Thanks this.

When I bought my new truck (almost 4 years ago now) I was researching APUs. Tri-pac seemed to have about a 50% "lemon" rate. About 50% of them were constantly breaking down to the point of them effectively not existing. I dug a little deeper into how much fuel they used vs how much I burn idling and realized I would NEVER save enough fuel to pay the 12k they wanted for it. So I went without. Now to be fair, I only spend a day or 2 a week away from home, soo...
The battery kind wasnt an option. I live in Minnesota so during the winter they wouldnt last long enough to keep it warm and in the summer (I drive at night and sleep during the day) they wouldnt be able to cool it off enough to sleep. So that didnt seem worth 6k I think it was then. -
That and the fact that Thermo King is horrible and charges double or triple of what they should be for parts. They sold me a belt for $50 (which I bought since I thought it would fix the issue and just wanted it done), now I called them today and they want $625 w/o tax for an ac compressor. Its unreal, I have to result to ebay or amazon, 3x less the price, not original but still will get the job done.
Im from MN too, if it in fact the motherboard was fried - I prob wouldve just resorted out to using just a diesel heater and figure something else during the summer -
That 50% is generious as hell. Trust me on that. Ive used 8 diffrent units over a decade and not ONE worked correctly. Simular numbers with carrier
Look into a green APU mine has near 5000 hours and the only issues so far were a recall part and a tech screwup. Well and one badly corroded terminal wire from a battery boilover. Its already paid for itself after just a year and a half in fuel savings....but i also tend to stay out 320+ days a year so it gets used a lot lol. Parts are all off the shelf standard car parts save like 4 things. Dead simple, dead reliable and easy to screw with on your own. The few downsides are its a tad loud and you gotta carry extra filters since no truckstop has them (though most auto or farm places do)mhlvc Thanks this. -
how many hours did it have when it blew up, i didn't think yanmars could detonate

Like 2500 lol. I would need to check the exact hours at thid point since its been a couple years. and yes i did an oil change every 500 hours when i got it. Thing was crap from the day i got my truck.
