I have 4 years with my class A mostly local driving experience . I have a Twic card and have my doubles and triples, tanker and I am working on getting my hazmat. I inquired on port truck driving employment, but these companies require port experience.
I feel stuck at making $25 an hr and not being able find better paying driving job. Meanwhile my friend back in 2021 only had 1.5 years experience with his CDL and was able to get hired on by a port logistics company making $28 hr.
I feel lost in my trucking career

If you could do anything and time, money, training was no obstacle what would you want to do? What's the first step in that direction?

That port work is NOT the only available CDL work out there.
Believe it or not -- there are other good-paying opportunities available.
Finish getting that hazmat -- then go fishing again.
If you do in fact have a good safety record, something should turn up.
The job hunt right now is NOT FOR THE IMPATIENT.
Where are you located?

I'm gonna throw this out there. Did you ask your friend how he got hired?
Obviously, if port work employers only hired those with port experience, they'd run outta port workers.austinmike, Stringb8n, bryan21384 and 3 others Thank this. -
I am in Southern California

We're in a recession. Look at other segments of trucking other than the ports. Lots of trucking job available. Refrigerated food and medicine has to keep moving even during a recession or depression. Drivers willing to pull reefers are always in demand.

The port worker/driver thing moves the needle when it comes to experience. Everyone wants that job. Home daily or frequently for decent money. Your friend got hired because he knew somebody, who knew somebody else, who knew somebody else. That's how that goes in that world. I was informed of that from someone who used to live in Savannah, GA and knew a lot of guys getting CDLs with the hope of getting hired on either right out of school or after a year of OTR. Those positions don't come open that frequently, and when they do, your networking game needs to be strong.

LTL or Foodservice $$$$

I'd go LTL or LInehaul before foodservice.
If you're young and in excellent shape, foodservice pays really well and better than LTL/Linehaul with some companies.Stringb8n Thanks this.
