Greetings, I plan to commission a 1987 truck into my fleet. Was a fire department vehicle and very lightly used. However as one might expect there are no computers involved. I started trucking in 2015 so I have never had the honor of using paper logs outside of trucking school. My question is, should I use paper logs, or should I just get a GPS with logging and use that? Seems like an electronic log would be easier to keep up with. I mainly want to be able to accurately keep track of state miles for IFTA without having to manually tally every time. Thanks for any advice.

Before the elog mandate I used the Big Road logging app.. I don’t know if it even exists anymore. What ever you decide just remember you’ll have to have the capability to print them out for any inspections. I had a wireless printer in the truck that worked great.
As far as ifta miles, I get mine from my Garmin GPS. I only have experience with Garmin and it’s mostly dead on accurate with my odometer. IFTA mileage from my ELD provider (Fleet Complete/ Big Road) is absolutely inaccurate.
Whatever you do you may want to log the mileage manually for at least one quarter to compare accuracy.RockinChair and Yoster Thank this. -
Why?
The biggest concern is its sitting, low mileage, and use doesn't mean it won't breakdown. -
Biggest issue will
Be with anything rubber needing to be replaced , all hoses and belts and tires and brake chambers , Probably brakes shoes too .
some wheel seals will have dried up and will leak when you start driving it .
but the mechanical stuff will have low miles and usually good maintenance unless it’s from a big city , most big city stuff is junk . City of Atlanta , has nearly half of their fire truck fleet out of service from neglect and no maintenance. -
Truck has been fixed up and hauling sand for a while before I had it sold to me. Wasn't sitting, just steady low miles. And it will be inspected again. Anyways I wouldn't have even mentioned it. Thanks to the two people who actually gave me advice on what I asked about.

Guy that taught me how to drive a truck just used a tape recorder for mileage for his paper books.

Seemed like a great system for simpler days.
