I'm having my doubts about it being the insurance companies. Why would a industry that bases it's highest auto ins. premiums on lack of experience and age reverse itself for truck drivers?
And why so much disparity in amount of experience and time limits? Everything from 3 months to 3 years experience in anything from past year to past 5 years? I think if were Ins. industry mandated, there would be more uniformity in requirements.
The companies, however, by using this excuse, can bring in exp. drivers and pay them bottom of the pay scale, making it much cheaper for them in cost. The difference between $.25 and $.30+ per mile can really add up to a chunk of change. The better companies that insist on 2 or 3 years experience, usually pay better to start with, and don't seem to have as bad a driver turn over problem.
Just my gut feeling, I could be wrong, have been many times before![]()
No work for ex-drivers?

I know what he's dealing with, got out of driving for over 10yrs and tried getting back in this year do to job lost, still had my CDL but no one would talk to me. Had to back to a CDL school, 6weeks with mentor and started out all NEW again. Only ones that would talk to me Warner, USA, Swift and the like, good luck out there my friend, your going to need it. It's not the same world in trucking as it was when I drove before

). I actually took one refresher course two weeks ago, and it felt pretty natural to be behind the wheel again.
Can I ask who you started out with? I just got off the phone with FFE before, and they said to fill out an application, and a recruiter would call me. Seems like they're the only ones so far that will even re-train me.
Anyone know of any other companies that will retrain drivers? I don't mind having to spend time with a trainer, but I don't have the finances, or the time to go to a driving school again.Last edited: Mar 10, 2010

Also, does anyone know if there's a phone number, or website to go to to find out if a truck driving school is "acredited", and which companies will honor any kind of training from a specific school? There's a school close to my house, on Long Island, NY that has been around since the 60's, but a couple companies I've called have stated that they "don't have any listings of schools in the NY area". How does one go about choosing the right Driver Training School?

Do you mind if I ask what company that was?
