Yep there was a pre emissions 14l Series 60. I was surprised to read here an owner attempted a 12.7 to 14l swap and it was a huge ordeal. I figured they could just interchange but nope

My dad always said a Detroit is 1 engine that you can run breathing like a dragon for years. And they all do….

Pretty sure the pre-emission 14L was only available from 2001 until 2003/2004 when the emission motors came out. I doubt a 1999 is a 14L. It would be pretty easy to post a pic of the tag and prove me wrong though.

Yep, pretty sure the first so called emmision were the egr models. 2001 engines in 2002 Trucks. I think someone on here had one a while back. I could be thinking of the member who had a 01 non egr 12.7 with the new compact bull gear. There’s the 12.7 550 hp. Very few were made for a short time in 2000, They weren’t advertised. Don’t know what that was all about. I think when the 14L came out, the max hp available on a 12.7 was 450. I’ve been tempted to turn down my 12.7’s to 450. Probably last longer, get better mpg.

With 430hp factory tune my max was 6.7mpg, after turning it up to 550 it was 8.2mpg. Granted I was doing a lot of PA trips back then.
Lower hp will definitely make it last longer, but I doubt it will improve the mpg

EGR wasn’t until 04. My FLD was a 2003 and had a pre emission 12.7. The pre emission 14L went up to 575hp. City Service out of Kalispell MT had some 575’s in Argosy cabovers and they were some mean trucks.

That’s pretty cool. I didn’t know any were out before 2001. You need to hang on to that as long as you can, or sell it for big bucks. There’s not many out in the real world anymore.
