C'mon drivers! What's the big deal about staying in HOS compliance anyway?

The problem I have is somebody that has never had the pleasure of meeting me has predetermined when I'm going to be tired. Being as young as I am I enjoy my afternoon nap but this can mess up my 14 hours.
Roadhound, truckerdave1970, dollylama and 2 others Thank this. -
It could be because they are not flying down the public road system in a 80,000 missile of death ?
JustSonny Thanks this. -
I guess my best answer would be wait time at customers and everywhere else. I never drove OTR under the current HOS, but the 14 hour clock could be a problem when you drive an hour then sit for five at a shipper - that would only leave you 8 hours for the rest of the day.
Our runs are adjusted to meet the HOS which makes it nice. We have to stay compliant at all times or you risk loosing your job.JustSonny and Wiseguywireless Thank this. -
Well; it all starts when the shipper takes 6 hours to load you. Then you stop for fuel and due to all the restarts in the fuel island you get out of there in a record time of 1 hour.
Then the traffic jam that has you sitting for 2 hours. Then you manage to get rolling and the scale is open and you get a level 3. A half hour later you be rolling. Dang; I am down to 4.5 hours on my 14 and I still have 7 hours to drive to drop this load today....

As I've said before, the problem isn't the rules! It's this antiquated, unsafe, and IMHO, ILLEGAL method of pay. LOW Pay per mile is what drives most of us to disregard to rules and ignore common sense! As soon as I got with a company that actually pays me quite well for ALL MY WORK, I quit needing to break the rules!
Now I am a SAFER driver. I get adequate rest EVERY DAY, I actually pretrip my truck EVERY DAY, I get defective items fixed RIGHT AWAY, and I don't feel the need to speed ANYMORE!
CSA 2010 didn't change my attitude. Over zealous, expensive law enforcement didn't affect my actions.
The only thing that has changed is my employer pays me a decent wage for ALL MY WORK. The CONSEQUENCES for illegal behavior are still the same (maybe even more severe than before), only the REWARDS for illegal behavior are GONE!
Kinda funny how that works, huh?
But what do I know, right? I'm just a stupid truck driver (according to the rest of the world)Enigma, Echo, mizdageeragn and 2 others Thank this. -
I take it you get paid by the hour ?
JustSonny Thanks this. -
Kinda, we get pay per mile, stop pay, and hourly pay. If I do extra work, I get paid, turn extra miles, get paid, extra stop, get paid.JustSonny Thanks this.
