I am just starting out as an owner op so I made up a new company and have that in place. I run under the Interline GST exemption so I won't charge gst on my invoices for hauling. Does that mean I don't need a gst number? As I read it I do not charge it so I cannot claim gst spent on expenses doing the work. Makes it easy I am just trying to get all my ducks in a row. I asked my accountant and she said she didn't really know about the gst exemption thing. I may not have asked correctly but anyway I am sure there are owner ops in here running Canada that are in this boat.

Get a gst#. You need it to claim back the gst on everything. I think for small businesses the number is $30,000 a year in sales where they do not have to charge their customer for gst.

Charging a customer gst or not:
If you are hauling direct for a customer, and pickup and delivery is within Canada, then you have to charge them gst. If you haul to or from the USA you do not charge gst. If you haul for a broker or on behalf of another trucking company, you do not charge gst.

I get the concept just not sure if I should bother getting a number as I won't be collecting it anyway. If was able to get back my gst from fuel and parts then that would be different. That is where I am unsure of the deal. Trouble with sitting at home waiting I have to much time to ask myself questions.

    You get it back on:
    -truck purchase
    -fuel
    -parts you buy
    -eeeevvvveeerrrryyyyttthhhhiiiinnnngggg

The only time trucking companies are in a remittance situation is operations say, local wood hauling, or dump truck work, grain hauling, where ALL of your invoices you charge it, so long as your expenses are less than your invoived amounts, you will have to remit. Because so much of it is "zero rated", you typically won't charge/collect very much if any at all. It depends on your source of work as I said above whether or not you are required to charge it to a customer or not. I was almost always in the situation where I was getting gst back every quarter.

I won't be charging customers in this scenario as we are running under that agreement deal. I have a gst number for my renovation business but there I buy and sell goods and labour. Once I have a proper sit down with my accountant for this year we will figure it out what I am allowed to claim back.

The driver responding to your questions has been an owner operator with his own numbers for many years. It would serve you well to pay close attention to his advices, they are facts not opinions.
