I just bought a 2016 International at auction it has the n13 motor and 600k miles on it. I brought some batteries out and drove it home, drove ok bobtail but felt lacking in power if I were to put a load behind it. The RPMs and speed weren't limited so I thought it wasn't in limp mode but I just bought a cheap scanner and pulled the codes and it seems there is in fact a torque derate.

    Here are the codes

    SPN 156 FMI 31
    Engine protection torque derate
    Condition exists

    SPN 524 FMI 15
    Aftertrestment SCR operator inducement severity
Data valid but above normal operating range, least severe level

    SPN 436 FMI 4
Aftertreatment 1 SCR catalyst intake gas temperature
Voltage below normal or shorted to low source

    SPN 322 FMI 10
    Aftertreatment 1 outlet NOx
    Abnormal rate of change

Then there is a body code I'm not worried about and I am curious what module this code is from SPN 655 FMI 14

My other question is if anyone knows of any common problem areas to check with the SCR system short of just replacing the whole thing. I am not the type to just start throwing parts at something.

Ok, the first thing you do is take your scanner and throw it in the garbage. It isn't displaying codes properly,or it can't display enough characters. It was missing the 4th digit.

    This is what you have;
1569 - 31 SCR tamper proof waring. This means an SCR fault has been ignored for too long and derate has been enabled.

    5246 - 15 same as above

4360 - SCR inlet temp sensor out of range low

3226 - 10 Outlet Nox abnormal rate of change

For the SCR temp sensor, you replace the SCR temp module.
For the NOx code, replace the outlet Nox sensor

For the SCR tamper proofing codes, if they are active, you cannot clear those with a generic scanner and you need to find someone with Navistar Engine Diagnostics to clear those out. They are hard codes.

Thanks Heavy, I was wondering about this scanner I thought the codes were supposed to be 4 digits. I think i will just go ahead and get an adapter for my laptop like a nexiq or something and try to find a copy of ned. Or a more generic software like jpro. (Edit: you say I can't use a generic scanner but I believe a full functioned diesel software like jpro may be able to clear hard codes?)

I was leaning towards replacing the sensors too but I saw a whole SCR unit on ebay with all the sensors attached to it for $1000 and was wondering what the chances were the actual SCR was bad.

Oh yeah and Merry Christmas guys thanks for the help.

    Heavyd and bzinger Thank this.

Looking at pro's coverage page or looks like it will not reset Aftertreatment on the n13, only the older maxxforces, guess that leaves NED. I'm going to look into my options there

The SCR derate codes require resetting SCR faults reset request which is actually a parameter in the ECM. Once reset, those codes will go inactive and then can be cleared. Your generic software would have to be able to adjust parameters and have access to service interval section of the parameters to be able to further access the SCR faults reset.

So it looks like I have a good running copy of NED, anyone recommend which cable/adapter to get? It looks like according to the manual NED works with nexiq usb link 2, noregon dla 2, and dpa 5. I have heard the drivers for nexiq can be troublesome so the Chinese clones are almost unusable. Haven't heard too much about the other adapters or their clones.
