As you say what are the differences a valid point. I have been an O/O for almost all my driving career so I KNOW the cost of things other wise I would have been broke and out of business a long time ago. What I said for ME it was cheap, for the amount of torque my setup produces. I never said it was cheap for YOUR setup. Please don't read into what I said as what YOURS should cost. However it's better to fix/replace than to breakdown on the side of the road when the drive line takes out fuel tanks air lines and a host of other expensive parts. Good Luck and Happy New Year

I did , and they’re not happy , make treats they gone put it back together like it is . Whatever …I can fix it wherever , I can take my drive shaft and bring them back fixed . Anyway I called in the morning , and stop any work until further notice .
I have to give them credit for bringing this to my attention, but , when you see #### like this …it’s bad business
I can’t condone paying $90 extra for a joint when everyone around sell it for 90 less and they make a profit. Like i said , the devil it’s in the detail, until you read and research the charges , you never know!
And you know , thank God for the internet , you take your phone out of your pocket and you can pull up the item, part number in seconds .. all you need is will…you have to lookup over your shoulder ..
Dispatch lying all the time they have , they gone have work, so much work, mechanics ($))# you when you break down, is a never ending bull$hit.
Like I said before, if the dealer or any other shop is selling for 160 same joint, trust me , they make profit, ok? I don’t know how much profit, but I know they do. And then you have these greedy ###$ , and you’ll never notice, you look at the receipt, and you’ll gone be able…this is not your turf, it’s not something you dealing with everyday, or they teaches you in school…you just have to do what you have to do …
you have to question everything, because behind your back, they’ll say, that’s another loooser bite the dust…

Owning a truck is so much fun!!

It isn't benign, don't be a mild insult here, it is a critical part and there is a reason why it needs to be replaced. Many don't even care, a lot of lazy shops with ignorant mechanics just don't even see it, they are parts changers so don't complain that they found it.
Because that's how it is. Design a better power transmission parts, manufacture them and sell them to OEM, it would be a welcomed thing.
Nope, that's not the right repair.
    Agreed.

Well technically the truck can't be released, sometimes a problem like that could lead to an accident and they are on the hook for it, meaning they will be sued and lose.
Yep it happens. I have replaced a bunch on the trucks I have.
Well some of the SP250 joints are Chinese-made, they are inferior, and they are sold cheaper. I got a bunch from an unnamed dealer who sourced them from a supplier with counterfeit parts and they were all replaced and those not used were returned, they paid for the replacing of all of them.
    For all the work?

    Not bad.

Cheaper than sitting on the side of the road with a hole in your tank and needing a tow plus hazmat cleanup.
Yep, it happens, it isn't ok but it happens.
Normall it is 30%, but then they are not paying 160 so if it is $250, their mark up seems to be more than 30%, like 60% which is bad.
Many of us deal with this issue more than once so we know.
Because some have paid a lot more. The parts are standard parts, the repair techniques are all the same, they cut off the yoke, then grind the end down to make it smooth, then put it into a jig to align the new one up and weld it up. Then they balance it, they are all the same.

I have found it cheaper, if I need a whole shaft, to just order it from Spicer. I used a driveshaft shop a lot when we needed one done right then.

But if we found issues during maintenance and knew it wasn't gonna come apart, i'd just order the assembly from Spicer

Just call Spicer customer service, they can let you know what they need. Dealership may be able to look up by VIN#. You already know you have SPL250's up front, and SPL170's in back.

That narrows down most of it. They'll need length of assemblies and slip yoke seperately IIRC

BTW, i don't necessarily think 5k$ was out of line if they were replacing all 4 gear box yokes, along with the work to shaft, and shaft yokes.

SPL shafts are quite a bit larger than average shafts, the joints are expensive, and the yokes themselves are too

No they can’t , very frustrating, trust me , can’t tell anything except the engine, they can give me engine related parts, they can’t see anything else , driveshaft , differential it’s blank they can’t help me, the worst , I can’t tell by looking at them because there is nothing , no plate , inscription I can look at them all day and still can’t tell what brand size it is. Normally was supposed to be some metal plate stamped to differentials , but because they’re so old, lucky you find paint around it

I haven't had much experience with gliders. Anybody know if the original VIN# would still be on the frame?
