I keep breaking exhaust studs on a 1997 6ts 3406e I tried stainless studs had one break I went back with factory gaskets and studs with all new spacers made sure all surfaces were clean made sure manifold was pushed all the way together and centered on studs for expansion torqued all in sequence to 41 ft lbs I check the torque at every oil change. 2 months later I have two more broke studs any suggestions

I've never had to do a manifold on a Cat. I do wonder though if pushing the manifold all the way together is the issue? The sections have nowhere to expand to so they try to force each other apart possibly.
I do recall Cat has a tool for centering the manifolds, no idea what it looks like or how it works.Last edited: Dec 31, 2023

Crankshaft dampener might need to be replaced. Once it doesn't absorb the energy from the crank when it rotates, that energy goes to all sorts of places. Vibratech says mine for a S60 Detroit should be replaced every 500k miles. Before I learned this years ago, I had lots of problems with bolts/fasteners: manifold bolts, AC clutch bolts, alternator bolt for the old V-belt style, etc. I've heard you will wear out a clutch faster, too
Magoo1968 Thanks this. -
I was told by pdi and pittsburgh power to push the sections together and then make sure I had space between stud and manifold hole sides so with hear and expansion it would not snap off the studs what do you think?

This is a new long block with new dampner and accessories

Yah, 2 months seems real fast for bolts to come loose with a bad dampener anyhow.

Anything heat related to do with a Cat, I only bought Genuine Cat parts(Hardware). I had the head replaced when I had my Cat a few years back, My Cat Guru warned me to have all studs and nuts replaced because when you reinstalled the exhaust manifold, the old ones might bottom out and you will have an exhaust leak eventually.

Thank you all

I used to go through that until I put a new manifold on. Haven't had an issue since.
Diesel Dave Thanks this.
