How to know when Pass is closed from snow?

guess it depends on what pass and where it is?

 

Usually signs warning of closure ahead of time

 

If you're in Wyoming and on the interstate, you will know. They will have signs saying its closed and instructing you to take whichever exit and prepare to sit for the duration while they take their sweet time at clearing the interstate. FYI, they regularly shut down the entire thing far beyond where it needs to be closed in Wyoming to prevent folks from being stranded without a motel or place to go.

 

It varies per state. Oregon has the best website I've seen Tripcheck.com. It shows you a statewide map of the roads, and you can click on symbols for each of the roadside signs and read them or look at any of the roadside cameras. Each interstate highway and state hoghway in OR has it's own Twitter feed. Other states have their state web site and many have 511 phone/websites. It depends on which states and which roads. There isn't one do-everything web site. If you want to know you have to look for it. There is nobody making the deciisons for you. But many of us will tell you how we decide about roads and weather.

Use this link if you travel I-80 in Wyoming. I use it religiously before crossing.

 

If you see no vehicles approaching from the other direction for more than 1 hour that's also a good sign the pass is closed.
