Help to identify transmission, please...

    For those who are way more knowledgeable about older rigs and transmissions, I'm a "shade-tree" mechanic at best...... Can do simple things, but beyond that..........
    I found a '98 Pete 379 that I'm enamored with, but at a loss as to what kind of tranny is in the 'ol girl... Shift knob is Eaton, name plate missing. NO Hi-Low or Splitter. Floor solid, no holes, no evidence that it might have been 2 stick. Did Eaton make a 5 speed tranny?
    Detroit 11.1 I series engine. Wish I had taken pics. If I get back there tomorrow I'll take pictures, maybe someone could tell me what to look for.
    If it is a 5 speed, what kind of work would it have been built for?

    I've driven 11.1 Detroit with 7 speed Spicer transmission that would be similar to what you described minus the Eaton shift knob.

    Probably a 7 speed. Use to drive a 81 Cabover Freightliner with a 300 formula / 7 speed. By no means my favorite transmission, but add a 1241D behind the 7 makes it more versatile lol….

    If it’s factory vin should tell you what it is . Any I D plates in glove box or on doors ?

    Could be 9,10,13,15, or 18 and have the range and splitter controls hidden somewhere on dash or under the seat. That was a customizing fad at one time.

    Crawl under the truck and look at trans. If it has air hoses on it, from it, and to it and/or has a back compound box it is a RoadRanger. Selectors must be hidden somewhere. If a much smaller box without air lines it could be a Spicer 5,6,or 7 speed.

    Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look for VIN and other info plates No shift diagram plate in cab, I looked for that.

    Are you sure that it is a 11 liter detroit ?I thought they had quit making those by 98 but I could be wrong.
