I’ll tell you what I miss.

Back when I was doing lowboy work it was go here, load forklift or whatever, and take it there. Call the boss for the next job. The best days had maybe 2 or 3 moves and zero contact with other humanoids. If it only it paid better...

I’ve always been a bit anti-social by nature, but the LTL business made it worse. Never in my life have I ever seen more of a bunch of lazy dishonorable lowlifes than the so-called “drivers” I work with now.

Sometimes I really do envy the OTR guys.

Unfortunately there are way too many slackers than workers. Jack Welch had it right, every year you should get rid of your bottom 10% performers.
Today however; I think you would have a hard time only getting rid of 10%. Then the big question becomes, what would new workers be like? My boss is not willing to answer that question.

You are exactly right if you think what is there is bad the replacement could be so much worse. Course there are chances of getting a good one that time. Or trading #### for shat as they say.

Parts of me want to slow down other parts absolutely not. Contrary to popular belief it has nothing to do with money…..or showing anyone anything. I am confident that I have 0 to prove to anybody. Till you’ve rode 36 into Denver on a pretty day, flew through the Badlands cause if you didn’t it was gonna be rough. Or take your parht-na (not sure that’s spelled like I want to sound) on his last ride cause he left to soon without warning. I don’t miss my youth really I’d just like to see most of it one more time

Heavy will be. I’m hooked to a buyers trailer. It’s best for me for a wagon to come with work. That extra pressure of dealt with others is not my favorite thing. If a kill plant hangs you up and you miss a 7am load for someone that ship sinks you’re a ####### till you catch ‘em in a bind and they gotta have you. If that one goes smooth then everyone is right back in love again lol. I’d I have a buyer that we’ve agreed to take care of each other that work’s really well. Now some guys thrive on the extra pressure of loading for the next man so to speak. It’s a preference deal. I should’ve sold it but values have took a dive and if I can not take a beating I would rather not. Things will turn around and pulling your own will become beneficial or worth the extra hassle in my eyes. Really it worked out cause it gives a life long friend something to pull till he figures his next move out.

How many of those pulling company wagons can afford to buy their own & haul for others?

Not very many. I have pulled a company wagon because it’s cones with work. And while the 15 percent of 3 dollars a mile lease they deduct to pull it can be more than a trailer payment on good weeks, it is an all inclusive deal. No insurance, maintenance etc. also the outside trucks load after the company trailers. They also usually end up with in their pockets than most who own their own trailer. That said to give a straight answer very few can afford one of their own. Keeping it moving can be really easy or a nightmare depending on the circumstances
