I just got off the phone with my brother. He told me PA got hammered pretty hard this morning with snow until it warmed up enough to turn to rain.viper822004, Old_n_gray and JohnBoy Thank this.

Oh yea that is always a proper mess. That is one thing that was interesting when I did freight was how the freight levels ebb and flow with the current events. To wit; election years it’s slow, last Friday of the month is busy. End of month/ end of quarter and look out. Freight at Estes didn’t stop in inclement weather it just got as far as it could. Which sounds like what you’re experiencing. If Denver was getting hammered with weather, all Denver trailers would come to KC until the weather cleared and it would be a jam packed cluster in the yard and sets dropped everywhere and triple parked. And inevitably mine would always be in the back. It always spells a good time to move 4 trailers to dig out the 2 you need.

JohnBoy,
I remember when I was hired at Conway Southern Express I had my double/triple endorsement but never any experience in pulling them. I got a 15 minute quick demonstration on how to hook up a set and then dispatched from Orlando, Fl. to Valdosta, Ga. I was "butt stuck" to the seat not knowing what to expect but all went well enough to become a driver trainer and spend the next 13 years and over 1 million miles with them.
When hooking a set I always found it easier for me to hook my dolly to my tractor and then spot it in front of my tail trailer, hook my lead trailer and back slowly to the dolly until you felt the contact. Then I would ease forward, hook the dolly to my lead and hook the set and perform the pre-trip.
You get used to the "wiggle" effect and the easier turning radius but I always would remember the fact that hard braking could trigger a jack situation in wet conditions. You will be fine because of your experience and work ethic and knowledge of how to handle any situation. Slow and steady is always better than fast and careless.surf_avenue, austinmike, Bumper and 10 others Thank this. -

Well I guess I’m official. Got my first paycheck deposited overnight. Drove a total of 985 solo miles in 3 days and spent the rest of the time riding with a few local drivers. Everything in the pay department was spot on, including the $486 of car rental fees and one nights motel stay on the drive out here from Richmond. This week will end up being a total of 1450 miles, all local work. On Monday I’ll finally be sent out OTR. I’m glad this worked out the way it did, there is a tremendous learning curve with FedEx and how they operate. I’ll be working my way to South Florida to the house starting Monday.
Though I’m not chasing miles or getting paid by the mile, I still can’t help but calculate my pay based on chasing miles. 40 years of getting paid like that is a hard habit to break.austinmike, viper822004, Gearjammin' Penguin and 16 others Thank this. -
Hard habit to break for sure, but it will happen. It did for me. Love being paid hourly.jarhead0311, Friend, dwells40 and 8 others Thank this.
