Dionoysis was the God of wine, festivity, and ritual madness. Roman's turned him into Bacchus, God of wine and revelry.
Then there's Methe, Greek God of drunkenness.
Either the Incans or Mayans had a God of drunkenness, and I think the Mongolians might have had one as well.
So yes, while people commonly drank "small beer" or watered wine through the day, they also got drunk on stronger ales wines, with Whiskey and brandy being available since the early to mid 1500s. Grog was invented to try and curb drunkenness in the Royal Navy. The concept of Prohibition started in the 1880s because of the massive alcohol abuse among the lower classes.
However you want to approach the subject, the idea that the use of alcohol in contemporary society is a sign of societal decline is disingenuous. Especially considering the per capita consumption of alcohol has gone down since 1980. When broken out by age group you find that the 20 somethings that are drinking less than ever and while the over 50 crowd seem to be doing their darndest to make up for the "sober curious gen z".

Remember the time’s stopping at Boomtown after crossing Donners pass in a snowstorm. Full bar! And drivers standing five deep at the bar.

Whether illegal or not I read a story of a driver who bought a case of beer and put it in his toolbox under the sleeper. Only accessible from the outside. He was heading home, stopped at the yard to take a few things out of the truck to take home and someone spotted the beer. Took pictures and reported it to safety. Poor guy got canned because the company had a zero-alcohol policy.

That new TC in Peotone IN is putting in a full service bar. I stopped there over the holidays, has loads of parking, showers, new restaurant will open, pretty slick place. I tried out the showers, $15. There was a hand held shower head, a regular shower head, a shower head on the roof, and two shower heads for the back. I was so excited I almost peed myself.
