I agree with state & local agencies that its just not worth it to invest in the overall expense to get the equipment here & everything that goes with it. We only get a winter situation like this only once or twice in a winter for maybe 3 or 4 days at most. Its not unusual for us to not have any winter precip at all some years. I cant be sure but I think 2021 was the last time we got anything like this where I was off work.

here in New England, our salt is trucked in, i see no reason why AL or any other state can get anything trucked in.

sometimes, we get cargo ships loaded with salt as well, LA has a seaport, doesn't it..???

all states have highway barns, or stations, or terminals, where salt can be stored, then covered over as we do here and any place else..

what is not used for the winter season, carries over for the next winter, and they add to it, to keep the stock on hand up, rather than have any shortages.

there really is no excuse for not having any preparations for snow, ice storms.

there have been a "few" winters where there was no need for plow trucks, or salt shakers..that's no reason to not have them on stand-by.

the highway DOT workers have other responsibilities, that keep them busy, then get the trucks ready for a storm in quick time.

really an ignorant/uneducated attitude for the state, to not be prepared.

costs are minimal for a set up for a few trucks, or all the trucks

that once or twice a winter your state gets that kind of weather can be life and death of it's citizens, or other travelers that must go thru.

i guess that state does not value human life....but i bet, they protect wild life

Our local ArDot yards, state and counties, all have dump trucks set up to take plows and shakers and they were out doing what they could. Probably just not enough of them, though all of the Interstate and primary two lane roads were well pre-treated before the crap hit.
County I live in only has around 8500 population so the tax base just isn't there to get more equipment for just a few days a year.

but at the very least...they did something....

pre-treating is done here as well, it really does a very good job.

I remember a few years back Massachusetts had set aside a budget (and then some just in case) for a major snowstorm that was forecasted for the eastern part of the state!
When the storm hit we burned through the budget and extra in less than 14 hours!!!LOL
