I’m one of those guys who struggles with the Split rule so I avoid using the #### thing.
I’m hoping someone can help me break this mental block.
This is a real world snapshot of my ELD:
1) Fresh 14 day
2) On duty for 0 hrs 4 mins 22 secs
3) Drive for 1 hrs 46 mins 22 secs
4) Sleeper Berth for 3 hrs 35 mins 53 secs
My premise:
Had I looked at my 14:00 when I had been in sleeper I should have had 10:12 left. I arrive at that amount of time by combining the 1:52 on duty and driving with the 1:56 in the sleeper. That gives me a total 3:48 since my work day begun. So by subtracting 3:48 from 14:00 yields 10:12 left.
My question.
After how long did the the 1:52 get added back to my 14:00 to take it from 10:12 to 12:08? Was it after 2 hours or was it after 3 hours.
Please limit answers to this question ONLY. I do have a couple more questions, but I’d really like to clarify then step by step. Also, if you can point me in the direction of what actual reg defines this then that is an added bonus. I looked at the cheat sheets on the FMSCA website but didn’t see this addressed.
Thanks everyone who answers. This has been kicking my butt for years. It seems I’ve asked many people this yet it seems everyone gives a different answer with different reasons.

As I understand it, you can take either an 8 and 2 split, ( or 2 and eight ), or a 7 and 3 split ( or 3 and 7 ).
So it would follow that you gained the time back after 2 hours. Providing you complete the split with an 8 hour break.
This does not take into account whatever algorithm the ELD is using other than what is in the regs.
I can DO the split sleeper, I just can't explain it. -
I don't think it resets until the 2nd part of the break is over.Ive only used it a few times, only once it worked out as expected.I know the first part has to be 2 hours minimum.Samsara eld, split sleeper.

First thing a Trooper is gonna yell about is can you do a pretrip in 4 min 22 secs. I don't know any truck drivers that can. And if you get pulled into a scale house saying you did a 4 minute pre-trip you know for a fact they are gonna check your trailer brake stroke with a tape measure.

Idk what log system you’re using, but at 2 hours your 14 is effectively paused because it will think you’re doing a split. I would guess that’s when your time gets added back on.

That said, what does that have to do with the question I asked. -
Your question is unanswerable as written, because your numbers don't add up.
You say that you had 3:48 in the sleeper. So your 14 should show 8:35 and change, a number derived by adding sleeper + drive + on duty.
At this point, your 14 and your 11 hr clocks will be the same.
You have the potential to add a maximum of 3 hrs from the time spent in the sleeper to your 14. But the ELD's I'm familiar with (Peoplenet and Samsara) won't automatically add this for you, you just have to remember the new expiration of the 14 hr clock (it's now a 17 hr clock, a number derived by taking the original 14 and adding the 3 hrs in the sleeper). And then fulfill the requirement of taking the 7 hr sleeper berth to complete the split.
I was wondering what brand of ELD you are using?gentleroger and tarmadilo Thank this. -
