Just wondering how many drivers live resident free, meaning with no aptment-house. In may of 04 I was otr mainly running the eastcoast 80 or so days straight. And paying rent for a place that you see 4 times a year is a waste. I save 8,000 or more not paying rent, in my opinion if your not in a day cab, home every night. It,s the only way to go, so any job otr you take, you just gave yourself an 8,000.00 dollar bonus. Stay safe and good luck to all.

    JustSonny Thanks this.

80% of $59 a day for every day that you are away, is a big benefit to lose.

i like having a place to call "home." when i bring a woman back to my pad, i'd like her to stick around long enough to get the task finished. i don't want her running away when she sees a truck.

I lived on the road for a couple of years in the early 90's. No home, no apartment, nothing. Took pay either via com-check or by cashing a company check at the bank it was issued from. It worked out well enough back then. Couldn't do it now. Even if you don't have a home you still have to go back to see familiar faces. Also, you can't buy anything substantive. If it won't fit in the truck for a couple of months it's not worth spending the money on. I still carry a bit of that habit with me.

V8-Mack if a driver wants to go that route its best to use a family member's or friends house as a home address. That way you can get the tax benefits of being on the road and place to get mail. I may be wrong, but I thought an actual address was needed to have a CDL.

Your right you need a perminent address, I use my sister,s address, in may it will be 6 years, without a residense. The last driver I talked to was a women, doing the same thing, she,s a real road warrier, staying out 6 months at a time. I just thought I would throw the idea out there, if there,s drivers trying to save money to buy a truck, house, etc. When you go to orientation, you stay at a hotel, your co. has a contract with the hotel, you can get a 110.00 dollar room, for 34.00 bucks, have a steak dinner delivered to your room, sit in the hot tub that,s open 24 hrs., with your new chick hehe. Finding a safe place to park the truck is the hard part, I used to pull a tanker hauling chocolate, so I payed the owner of the lot in piles of candy, which he said he gave to the women at the bank, he,s a big wheel that owns strip malls,so the bank women are always excited to see him, asking when is that trucker coming to town. haha

I tried that, let my apartment lease lapse.

But now I'm trying to get a "local" job and where exactly is local again?

I've had a couple of companies turn me down because I wasn't within their hiring radius. HELLO?

Right now I've got a regional short-haul (just started, wish me luck) and I've spent the last 2 days looking at apartments to rent untill I can get enough together to buy a house.

    ###### I want my own place again,,, and I want,,,,STUFF! Just STUFF!

I'm getting divorced right now, and will be doing just this.

I have my address down as my mother's place (sadly, I'm 39) to cover taxes, cdl and my ham radio license.

But I will have no place of my own, and will take time off wherever I want, which will be very cool.

I'll be able to visit friends I haven't seen, and I'll actually be able to stop at some of these places I've seen out here on the road (get a hotel, rent a car)

I'll be able to sock away a LOT of my cash, as the only bills will be storage and my cell/internet. I'll also carry auto insurance, the basics, as I will not have a car after the divorce.

After two marriages, I don't want the hassles of a "place" right now.

So, I will definitely be a "wanderer".

Would be nice if we could get a "sticky" thread going in one of these forums so that anyone doing or thinking about this can have a clear place to go with questions or ideas about living like this.

I posted recently some questions about going this route, got some good answers, plus did a lot of research on it and found some more info. Wish it was all in one place, so the searching would have been easier!

you might want to check with the auto insurance company, after I got rear ended once and it totaled my beater I thought I could have insurance and no car, but they wouldn't let me. It may vary by company and state though.
