Hello out there. I'm in the process of pulling apart my 3406B 4mg to reseal the front section. I've opt'ed to try to slide the cam ahead to get the front plate off. Seems that I'm unable to take all the pressure off the cam by backing off the rockers and pulling push rods because the intake push rods don't get enough slack to be removed. So the best i've been able to do is to keep rotating around till I have a little cam pressure on two of the intake lobes. maybe this is ok? Trying to avoid having to remove rocker assemblies. Looks like i'll get about a max of 1/2" slide out of the cam before the rockers will slip off the cam lobes. Judging by the length of the guide dowels on the lower front block (3/4") this method is looking pretty questionable. Does the water pump have to be removed to get the plate off ?

1st… no it’s not ok to have any pressure on the cam ,
Why are you not wanting to take the rooker assembly off . I wouldn’t ever attempt to try and do what your trying ever !your gona have too run the overhead regardless Make sure you keep the push tubes in the correct order you removed them also
And yes I would remove the water pump i I also would think about replacing it if you have no idea how long that water pump has been on there now’s the easiest time to do thatLast edited: Jan 23, 2024

I was trying to avoid removing the rocker assembly as I do not have a torque wrench that goes beyond 300ft.lbs.
I've read where other mechanics have done it this way, but , of course, it is the internet! Reader beware right?
Thank you for your advice Last call. I appreciate it.Last Call, Oxbow, W923 and 1 other person Thank this. -
You have one other option. I’m not gonna tell you how to do it you have to figure that out on your own. What I do is make sure I’m on the base circle of cam lobe. Run adjustment to full slack then pry the push tube side of rocker arm to get the push tube out. There are a 100 different ways of doing it. Find the one that works for you. I have done it with everything from a big screwdriver to a tool I’ve made. You’re not gonna hurt the valves that is what the bridge is for.

Thanks for the tip Wore out. Great idea! Seems like with about 4 push tubes pulled it should be a no pressure on cam situation. I spent the afternoon pulling the water pump today because of course the thermostat housing has to be removed and of course all five bolts were completely melded with the aluminum housing. Just got the last one drilled and removed about dinner time, UGHHH! Hopefully I"ll make a little better headway tomorrow.

I’am sure you won’t forget but make sure you Anti-seize all your bolts when you reinstall them either yourself or some will will appreciate you for doing that at a later dateparkway Thanks this.

You better get all the push tubes out cause keep in mind they set on the lifters and the lifters ride on the cam. All of those need to be clear of the cam to even consider moving it. A fluffed up roller and a bad lobe after a fresh reseal sure causes heart burn. Take your time do it once and done
