Are Satellite Radio Common In Company Trucks Now?

From what I see, most large companies have SXM antennas integrated from the factory, but it's the driver's responsibility to obtain a subscription. I unplugged the antenna from my dash radio and into my receiver, which then goes into the rear aux for the radio. 14 years ago I paid about $350 for lifetime of the radio, but to change the receiver is prohibitively expensive. Heck, adding it to a car was "what you talking about Willis?!" expensive. If my SXM receiver ever dies or my next truck doesn't have an sxm antenna, I'll just start using the app. If they cut my access to the app, that's that. There are other options that are most cost effective, not to mention my 11,000 odd songs on the old Ipod from 2008.

SXM is doing the same thing that terrestrial radio stations did 20 years ago - taking control of the song selection from the "DJ" and relying on a playlist rotation. It's not as enjoyable as it used to be.

 

I had SXM for 6 months. I liked it, but it also plays a limited number of tracks over and over, it's just a larger group of tracks than FM radio.

 

It’s weird how you start humming the next song randomly before it pops up even though if you think about it you have no clue what’s next. Somehow you’re subconscious knows though lol .

Satellite radio isn't worth it IMO. I can play the same 30 songs played on Hair Nation from a CD and save myself the $200/year or whatever it was they tried to charge me when I cancelled 6 years ago.

 

Every XM Radio has an id. That id is assignable to your sXm account. No need to buy a radio. You will have to use a computer and create an account. Not sure if the mobile app works as most of the time they want to make it as difficult as possible to cancel.

I agree. Waste of money compared to Spotify and Pandora. The ONLY thing sXm has going for is its vehicle integration which they pay dearly for as evidenced by their limited streaming catalog.

Grumps, get yourself a quality cellphone holder and stream spotify via cell, it doesn't use enough data for any carrier to care unless your on some antiquated jitterbug old peoples cellular limited data plan from 10 years ago.

Cool thing i like to do is share my playlists with others. Speaking of, wheres that forum member Denixx, he has a cool taste in music. Gotta see if he has spotify.

 

If you have that much hot spot data then you might be on like a 25 or 50 gig a month data plan. US Cellular gave me a "generous" 25 gigs of hotspot data switching off their unlimited plan several years ago.

All of them feared that people would starting streaming and casting to tv's over cell for lack of affordable home internet if they could get it at all. The gubment has largely subsidized home internet now with whats called fiber to the node and then using that traditional copper/coax the last mile into your home.

Good for those that want to feast on mobile data i guess. I know i watch way to much tv on my phone at "work." Makes the monotony of the 12hr day go by a wee faster. Plus, they aren't exactly producing new "Outlaw Country" anymore, lol

 

With new trucks it's getting harder and harder to find a place to mount an SXM antenna, so I just started streaming through the app on my phone, which connects to the truck's headunit via Bluetooth.

Also, I have a barely-used Onyx radio and mounting kit for sale.

I have to disagree with that statement, SXM has some good hosts in the political talk channels whose shows aren't syndicated across other outlets.

 

I have all the trucks ordered with the head unit that works with XM radio, and have a commercial license for the truck which isn't cheap. I have also a lifetime subscription (got it when it was $200) and had issues with it and the unit that I wanted to transfer the license to so now I use the app and very happy with it.

That said, I have a few drivers who hate it, so they wanted a new stereo and I told them put in the request (in writing) and I will see what we can do. One of them decided to put in his own system, which is alright, but I will not cover the equipment on my dime, they have to pay for the insurance.
