You've got to be a special kind of stupid to shoot someone for stealing your phone. Especially a trainee who lives in your truck. Just kick him out and be done fool.

In 13 years of training I've never had an issue with someone stealing anything of value from me. And if they did - so be it. I work off the assumption that the truck will spontaneously combust with all my stuff in it - nothing is irreplaceable or worth risking my physical well being to protect. I cannot comprehend risking an assault charge by brandishing a weapon, let alone the thought process of actually using the weapon. Even if the only comeuppance was being fired, that's still going to cost more than the phone.
But then again, I don't understand people's inability to respectfully deal with issues. Tonight as I set up to back a guy walked across the aisle to a truck and slammed his hands on the hood. At first I assumed it was a buddy of his and he was just giving the dude a jump scare, but I was wrong. The guy started screaming "turn off your ffing lights". The driver inside the truck looked scared and confused, but rolled down the window and there was a "conversation " held, sounded more like threats to me, but I was backing in and not paying attention.
I don't know what if anything occurred before I rolled in, this could have been a long developing thing, but it seemed like both a major overreaction and a piss poor way to obtain one's goal. Knock, knock 'sorry to bother you but your head lights are shining into my cab, could you please turn them off', is a much better opening gambit and is less likely to end up with you being shot by someone claiming to 'defend their ground'. -
A lot of people stressed way out these days.
