This article describes this as being the fuel tank for the truck, the truck being powered by propane, or whatever initialism applies to it:

"Two 100-gallon compressed natural gas tanks were on the truck, the LAFD said. At about 9 a.m., firefighters continued to assess another tank on the burned out truck.

"The unique aspect of this vehicle is that it's not run on diesel or gasoline, but it is actually propelled with CNG, or compressed natural gas," said LAFD Capt. Erik Scott.

UPS recently announced plans to purchase more than 6,000 natural gas-powered trucks. This commitment represents a $450M investment in expanding the company’s alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicle fleet.

Buying these CNG vehicles is super helpful because they can interchangeably use RNG and conventional natural gas. Building the CNG fleet capacity is vital to increasing the company’s use of RNG.
