Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

i wanted to drive last year but i was reading so much of negativity on trucking forums until it got to the point where i didnt want to drive anymore...is trucking really that bad?
-
Depends on where you come from (meaning your current/previous occupation), and whom you drive for. Personally, I'm happy for the most part.
I started out at Swift pulling flatbeds and steps. -
This make for a very interesting question, and would made an excellent new post, but its yours I'll leave it to you.
The short answer to your question is: it's a long answer.
As you you could guess many variable play into the equation, the satisfactory answer is always ever illusive: for example: you might ask, is a certain school really so bad? and the kidz that are gettin po grades would say "hell yeah, and worse" and the kids getting excellent grades would say "no, I think it's an outstanding institute for higher education"; but wait there really are some bad schools out there, regardless of what the dumb down kids say, lol
So you see the answer to your question is ever illusive. What all really boils down to "IS" "YOU"....I wrote a blog a little while back, I think its still on my blog entitled something like "You are in business from day one in trucking" read that, it talks about becoming a student of the business, mastering your market, and exploiting it to your advantage, hope that helps.......Jo Bernard -
Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT take all that is written on a forum as gospel. As you found, you'll find more negative than positive. Why? Because it's human nature for someone unhappy, mad, disgruntled, etc.. to look for a place to vent, wheras someone content doesn't always feel the need to declare it.
Forums only constitute a small percentage of all the truck drivers out there. The total membership of this board only equals aprox. the total number of drivers at Swift, Werner and one or 2 other big companies. And lots of board members are inactive, haven't ever driven, or don't drive any longer. To get a real feel for how drivers feel, get out and talk to them, at truck stops or wherever else you can find them. I've found lots content, or at least, satisfied drivers who have never been on any forum.
As for trucking being 'bad', that's up to the individual, as JoBernard stated. Everyone gets into it for all kinds of reasons and many times with preconceived notions of what it's like. If the reality doesn't match those expectations, people leave the field, often with a bad taste in their mouth. On the flip side, there are those who find what they are (or were) looking for and are satisfied. They might drive for more than one company before finding the perfect balance between the good and bad, but thay are overall happy with truck driving.
Unfortunately, there's no 'try it before you buy it' deal out there. -
OMG ROFL. Like the company do ya?
