1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Thinking about driving again. Suggestions?

I am definitely open to hear people tell me about who they are driving for currently, and what the experience is like. I will also be searching the threads in the forums here, and looking in other places. :)

I work for a medical imaging Company. I mostly haul mobile medical scanners but I also pull a van otr for a dedicated acount we have on the side. It's a great gig, pay's real well, good vacation, insurance could be better, good people. We bobtail 60% of the time as we drop a scanner and bobtail back. I get paid the same though. I'l be in California next week, been doing alot of midwest lately.

I like it but the jobs in this field are limited but there is a good number of companies doing it. Plus it's out of the NORM for trucking jobs which is nice

Interesting field there. Probably not something I would be able to get into immediately after being out of the industry again now for 3 years, but definitely something to look into.

We don't run anything out there anymore. A while back we bought a company out there but basicly just took the equipment and eventually shut it down.

Alliance imaging is the biggest co in the country google them. or try to google mobile medical imagining NM, or interim medical imaging, NM. and see if that turns anything up

I think I have narrowed my decision down to Schneider National. I have one other option with a former small company I drove for, but I don't feel like running that hard again, and don't want to constantly be doctoring up my logs to have hours.

Schneider will pay me for my experience in the past 5 years, which puts me in the 1-2 year range, or .33/mile, unless I want to run team, then .38. (I don't see myself running teams)

They "claim" to be about 85% drop and hook, which is something I was interested in after so much time spent picking up produce at multiple points and sitting in a grocery warehouse waiting to unload.

It is also possible that I won't be required to go out with a trainer (haven't driven in over 3 years), depending on their road test evaluation. That said, I probably wouldn't mind going out for a week or two just to get familiar with things again.

I never thought I would see myself working for a large trucking company like this, but given the changes in the trucking industry, the tightening up on laws, it just seems to make the most sense for me right now if I do in fact go through with heading back out on the road.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are, but I've only been out 1.5 yrs.; nevertheless, it is enough non-driving time so that I am really having a tough time finding a job, too. In my opinion, I feel that in order to re-establish ourselves we have to make some sacrifices, in the short-run, such as lower pay, fewer benefits, etc., in order to get that much needed "recent driving experience". With around six months under your belt you'd present yourself as a desirable candidate for hire and able to command far more acceptable terms. Good luck to us all!
